Vnímala svou osamělost, nejistotu a hluboký smutek. Tohle dřív bývala její matka, ta vřelá a energická žena jménem Katrina.

To strach člověka nutil stavět přístřeší, hledat jídlo a pěstovat rostliny. * * *

Kira plánovala chýš znovu postavit. Kdyby se jí povedlo sehnat pomoc, i když to nebylo příliš pravděpodobné, netrvala by stavba dlouho, zvlášť ne v tuhle roční dobu, na začátku jara, kdy byly větve stromů pružné a podél řeky bylo dost a dost hustého bahna. Často sledovala při stavění ostatní, takže si nejspíš dokáže jakýs takýs přístřešek vybudovat. Rohy a komín možná nebudou úplně rovné.
„Nemysleli to zle,“ připomněla jí.
A prstíčky jsi měla dlouhé a hezky tvarované –“ „A silné. „Vždyť to víš.“ „Ale ráda to jméno slyším nahlas. Nedala sis to vymluvit,“ připomněla matce, kde skončily.
„Ano,“ povzdychla. „A všechno uvnitř taky?
a táhnout ho bude těžké. Chtěj to místo.
Nijak ji to nepřekvapilo.
štěrku a písku. Zakručelo jí v břiše a ona si uvědomila, jaký má hlad. Podél řady nevelkých chýší zabočila k místu, kde žila, a došla k hromadě popela a zčernalých uhlíků, svému bývalému domovu.

„My tohle místo potřebujeme,“ křikla jedna. „My tě tu nechceme,“ řekla. „Už do naší vesnice nepatříš. Jsi nám k ničemu, s tou svojí nohou. Matka tě vždycky chránila, ale už tady není. A ty by ses měla taky klidit.
Co by udělala moje matka? přemýšlela Kira horečně. Kira napřímila ramena a promluvila.

Ještě před zítřejším soumrakem bude tohle místo naše a ona bude pryč.

Možná k tomu dojde už dneska a ty ostatní budou u toho, budou tlumit její křik a hodnotit novorozeně.

Její prsty dnes bez jakéhokoli vedení nebo zkušenosti bez váhání kroutily, proplétaly a vyšívaly barevná vlákna do zářivých vzorů překypujících jasnými barvami.
