RINGKASAN
Research and development activities on LPG vehicles have been increasing LPG engine performance which is nearly as good as the gasoline engine. Exhaust emissions produced by LPG engine is also reported lower than gasoline engines. However, results from previous studies did not explain the level of the tank at the time of data collection. Meanwhile, LPG is a mixture of propane and butane molecules which have different properties. This paper presents an investigation of characteristic LPG composition in the fuel line during the discharging process. Samples were taken periodically on the fuel line by special gas syringe then injected to the Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS). The series of test on lengthwise LPG tank shows that the propane and butane molecules are not evenly during the discharging of the tank. However, changes in LPG composition during the discharging process do not significant affect the energy delivery to the combustion chamber, CO2 emissions, and potential cooling effect. Keywords: Discharging process; LPG composition; energy content; cooling effect.

BAB 1
PENDAHULUAN
Sebagian besar peneliti bahan bakar LPG
Sementara itu, performance campuran propane (C3H8) dan butana (C4H10) sebagai refrigerant hydrocarbon diantaranya dilakukan oleh (Alsaad and Hamaad 1998), (Wongwises and Chimres 2005), (Dalkilic and Wongwises 2010), (Austin, Kumar and Nanthavelkumaran 2012), dan (Agrawal and Matani 2013).

TINJAUAN PUSTAKA
sistem
absorpsi.
(Vicatos,
Gryzagoridis
beberapa tahun ini and
Wang
2008)

𝑄𝐿 = 𝑄𝑐
(2.1)
𝑄𝐿 = 𝑚𝑐 ∙ 𝐶𝑝,𝑐 ∙ ∆𝑇𝑐
(2.2)
∆𝑇𝑐 =
𝑄𝑖𝑛𝑡𝑜_𝐿𝑃𝐺 𝑚𝑐 ∙𝐶𝑝,𝑐
(2.3)
9
(Masi and Gobbato 2012), melakukan pengukuran terhadap performa vaporizer LPG.
Gambar 2.4 diagram P-h siklus refrigerasi kompresi uap
10
11
Total beban thermal yang menjadi beban AC disajikan dalam persamaan berikut (Fayazbakhsh and Bahrami 2013) dan (Vaghela and Kapadia 2014). 𝑄̇𝐴𝐶 = −(𝑄̇𝑀𝑒𝑡 + 𝑄̇𝐷𝑖𝑟 + 𝑄̇𝐷𝑖𝑓 + 𝑄̇𝑅𝑒𝑓 + 𝑄̇𝐴𝑚𝑏 + 𝑄̇𝐸𝑥ℎ + 𝑄̇𝐸𝑛𝑔 + 𝑄̇𝑉𝑒𝑛 ) (2.10) (𝑚𝑎 𝑐𝑎 +𝐷𝑇𝑀)(𝑇𝑖 −𝑇𝑐𝑜𝑚𝑓 ) 𝑄̇𝐴𝐶 = − 𝑡 𝑐
(2.11)
𝑡𝑐 = 𝑙𝑛|𝑇 −𝑇𝑝 0
𝐶𝑜𝑚𝑓 |
(2.12)

ABSTRACT Research and development activities on LPG vehicles have been increasing LPG engine performance which is nearly as good as the gasoline engine. INTRODUCTION In the last decade, the development of automotive propulsion technology has focused on electric vehicles (EVs) and fuel cells. The EVs have been commercialized in some countries as green cars. However, the market for EVs is much lower than conventional automotive propulsion such as gasoline and diesel engine due to limited mileage and high total cost of ownership [1]. Biofuels from plants such as ethanol and biodiesel have also been developed, but its production will challenge the availability of land for crop production [2]. Therefore, LPG is still economically viable in some develop countries to substitute gasoline and to reduce environmental impacts. LPG as a road vehicle fuel has been applied around the 1900s [3]. Initially, LPG vehicles produce lower power, ranged from 5% to 20% than gasoline vehicles [4-7]. Rapid research and development lead to significant reduction of that loss. For old LPG vehicles, the ignition timing adjustment is mostly used to increase engine power nearly to gasoline

engine [8-12]. The effect of LPG on emissions and engine performance also has been investigated by many researchers; among others are Murillo et al [14], Saraf et al. [15], and Gumus [16]. Most of the researchers confirmed that emissions from LPG engine are lower than the gasoline engine. In the previous study, LPG can be used not only as a fuel but also has a potential cooling effect to be hybridized into vehicle’s air conditioning system. LPG evaporation in the vaporizer device produces cooling effect that can be used to help cooling car’s cabin. The LPG fuel system was simulated at the 2000 cm3 engine with various compositions of propane and butane to determine the characteristics of the potential cooling effect produced. The engine is able to provide cooling effect more than 1.0 kW at 3000 rpm. The various LPG composition also affects the potential cooling effect produced [17]. This concept was previously conducted by Mohan [18] and Ghariya et al. [19] in a burner. The cooling effect of LPG evaporation was also observed in the domestic refrigerator by Shah et al. [20], Nikam et al. [21], and Mhaske et al. [22]. However, studies related to the LPG as fuel or as a heat absorber did not explain the level of the tank at the time of data collection. In fact, LPG level in the tank is decreased during the discharging process. Considering that LPG is a mixture of propane and butane with different properties, this paper presents an investigation of LPG composition in the fuel line during the discharging process and its effects on energy combustion, CO 2 emission, and potential direct refrigeration. LITERATURE REVIEW In general, LPG is a mixture of propane (C3H8) and butane (C4H10) and the small part of ethane (C2H6) or pentane (C5H12) that is stored as a liquid in the pressurized cylinders at 0.6-1.2 MPa [23]. The percentages of propane and butane for composing LPG are different in winter and in summer, which the higher percentage of propane in winter [24]. Butane provides 12% energy higher than propane on the same volume burned at temperatures above the freezing point. However, propane is more reliable when it is stored at low temperatures. In the atmospheric condition, the boiling point of propane reaches -44°C while butane is only 0°C. On the other hand, the liquid density of propane and butane is different, 489.45 kg/m3 for propane and 571.99 kg/m3 for butane [25]. Propane and butane or mixtures of them also cause differences in vapor pressure [26, 27]. The greater the composition of propane in LPG, the higher is the vapor pressure. The atomic structure of propane and butane is presented in Figure 1.

LPG Composition of Household LPG Cylinder On the household LPG cylinders, propane and butane compositions from cylinder to burner during discharging process has been investigated by Zainal et al. [28]. This study shows the ratio propane to butane was not equal during discharging process. At the initial stage of discharging, there is no butane molecules flowed from the cylinder. Butane molecules would take some periods of time to flow together with propane molecules. The higher percentage of propane, the longer the time will be taken. In general, for all compositions, vapor is dominated by propane at the beginning of discharging (Figure 3). During discharging process, temperature drops inside the cylinder. As a result, the ice layer is formed on the cylinder wall, in which it shows the heat absorption for evaporation.
Figure 2. The composition of LPG from Household LPG cylinder [28] LPG Fuel Line in Vehicle Application On the vehicle application, LPG tank occupies lengthwise on the rear trunk or mounted on the chassis. The basic schematic of LPG fuel system with vapor phase injection (VPI) system is presented in Figure 3. LPG tank for the vehicle is also equipped with a deep-tube as an outlet pipeline. The deep-tube is mounted on a multi-valve unit. It enables LPG to flow into vaporizer in liquid form. In this condition, LPG exits from the tank to the fuel line without change of phase. Thus, the LPG pressure before vaporizer is only slightly lower than the pressure inside the tank. This phenomenon is very different from the household LPG cylinders for cooking as assessed by Zainal et al. [28].

Figure 3. Basic schematic of LPG fuel system [29] In fact, the commercial LPG for automotive market must meet the standard that is not defined as the exact composition but limited fuel properties only [7]. In Indonesia, the specification of LPG for road vehicles is regulated by the Government through the Director General of Oil and Gas in 2009. However, it is not explained clearly. It only determines the minimal composition of C3 and C4 is 97%. Due to the differences in cylinder geometry and cylinder position investigated by Zainal et al. [28], and differences properties of propane and butane, the purpose of this study is to investigate the composition of LPG in the fuel line during discharging process. EXPERIMENTAL SET UP Experimental Set Up and Apparatus In this study, the LPG tank was removed from the vehicle and filled ± 85% by volume (100% by mass) at the gas station. The tank was placed on a digital balance and allowed to stand for one day. A shut-off valve was installed in the pipeline between the LPG tank and the expansion valve. An expansion valve was mounted on the evaporator inlets to decrease the pressure and to regulate the LPG flow rate. A flow meter was installed on the exit side of the evaporator for monitoring the LPG flow rate. Ambient air flows through the evaporator by an electric blower to help LPG evaporating. LPG flowed from tank to fuel line by activating shut-off valve. Samples were taken during discharging process every 2 kg of weight loss (1.4 g/s). The samples were analyzed by a Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS). The experiment set up and test equipment is presented in Figure 4.

Figure 4. Experiment set up and apparatus Temperature and Pressure Measurements During the test, temperature and pressure are recorded continuously for monitoring the physical property of LPG. LPG temperature before expansion valve, after expansion valve, and after evaporator was recorded by PT-100 thermocouples. LPG temperatures recorded by the thermocouple are fed to the multi-channel modular temperature controller TM4N2RB series. Next, the temperatures data were processed and displayed on a personal computer trough the DAQmaster software in Present Value (PV). Measurement accuracy of temperature is PV±0.5% or ±1°C. Meanwhile, LPG pressure (in gauge) before and after expansion valve was recorded by PSAN pressure transducers in Present Value (PV). Measurement accuracy of pressure is PV±0.5% F.S at 0°C to 50°C and PV±1% F.S at 10°C to 0° C. Composition Measurement During the sampling process, LPG flow rate is maintained at 1.4 g/s through the expansion valve adjustment. Samples were taken in the evaporator outlets by a special gas syringe. The composition of LPG sucked into the gas syringe is assumed the same as the composition in the fuel line. Samples were taken every 2 kg of weight loss. Next, the sample is injected into TQ-8040 series of GC-MS. Data from GC-MS are then processed and recorded by a personal computer.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Pressure and Temperature Distributions During the sampling process, in order to monitor the physical properties of LPG, pressure and temperature are recorded continuously at points as shown in Figure 4. The time taken from one sampling to the next is recorded by using DAQmaster software. LPG pressure and temperature at time sampling are presented in Figure 5. During discharging process, the temperature of air from the electric blower (Tair,in) is 35°C.
Figure 5. Temperature distribution (a) and pressure distribution (b) in the lengthwise LPG tank during the discharging process From Figure 5, the physical properties of LPG samples can be found out by comparing the pressure and temperature at the time of sampling. Firstly, LPG before expansion valve is liquid as sample number 1 to sample number 10. In this point (T 1, P1), temperature and pressure of LPG are 25-27°C and 0.59-0.69 MPa, respectively. However, for sample number 11, LPG before expansion valve is vapor. The temperature and pressure at this point are 18°C and 0.218 MPa, respectively. These conditions confirm the end of deep-tube is submerged during sample number 1 to 10. Secondly, LPG evaporation is completed in the evaporator, except the last. The heats exchange from LPG to the environment is not only by latent heat transfer but also by sensible heat transfer. This phenomenon can be seen by comparing the temperature of LPG at the time of entering and exiting evaporator. LPG temperature at the time of exiting the evaporator is much higher than at the time of entering the evaporator. Finally, LPG after evaporator is superheated vapor. At this point (T3, P2), all temperature of the sample is on the range of 16-28°C while all pressure is 0.03 MPa. Therefore, it can be concluded that LPG samples are taken in vapor forms. Molecule Distributions A series test of LPG composition during the discharging process has been carried out by GC-MS. The complete result of the LPG composition during the discharging process is presented in Table 1 and Figure 6, respectively.

Figure 6. Molecules distribution of LPG during discharging process at 1.4 g/s Based on Figure 6, the characteristics of LPG composition during the discharging process can be observed. The series of test on lengthwise LPG tank shows that the propane and butane molecules are not evenly during the discharging of the tank. Six samples showing the composition of propane is higher than butane. Meanwhile, five samples showing the composition of butane is higher than propane. This result is different with household LPG cylinder which has outlet valve located on the upside. In the household LPG cylinder, LPG evaporates inside the cylinder before it exit to burner. Due the vapor pressure of propane is higher than butane; propane will evaporate earlier than butane. In this study, LPG flows from the tank to fuel line in the liquid phase during the deep-tube is sinking in the LPG liquid. Evaporation occurs on the surface of the fluid and fills the space inside the tank. It is indicated with pressure in the tank during the discharging process is nearly constant; ranges for 0.59 to 0.69 MPa for sample number 1 to 10. Since the liquid of LPG is lower than the end of the deep-tube, fully evaporation occurs inside the tank. Considering that this test is static, the electron negativity of molecule is the closest reason to explain this phenomenon. Propane and butane are non-polar molecules, in which the electrons are spread evenly, so it does not show positive and negative poles in the molecule. The atomic bonds in propane and butane are only C-H and C-C. Electron negativity of carbon (C) and hydrogen (H) is almost the same, 2.5 for C and 2.2 for H. Therefore, the CH bonds in propane and butane are almost perfectly covalent. The electron negativity difference is less than 0.5 so it ensures that propane and butane are nonpolar. Thus, there is no electrostatic force from molecules to others making it easy to mix. Effect on Energy Combustion and CO2 Emission Referring to the Figure 6, a numerical simulation was used to predict characteristics of energy delivered to the combustion chamber (HHV). Based on experimental data, the curve of energy content and CO2 emissions throughout the discharging process are presented in Figure 7. Although the composition of propane to butane during the discharging process is uneven but the HHV per kg of fuel is almost evenly. As it is known that the energy content of propane and butane is almost the same. HHV of propane is
38
Lampiran. Luaran penelitian (artikel)
50.330 kJ/kg and HHV of butane is 49.150 kJ/kg [30]. Furthermore, the product of CO2 emissions is calculated by complete combustion. With the oxygen to nitrogen ratio in the air is 21/79, the CO2 produced per kg of fuel is 1.51 Nm3 for propane and 1.53 Nm3 for butane, respectively [31]. It means that LPG composition does not significant effect on CO2 emission. 55

Figure 7. Energy delivered and CO2 emission durimg the discharging process Effect on Potential Cooling Effect The function of vaporizer in the LPG fuel system is to transfer heat energy to LPG and then LPG evaporates completely. Through the evaporation process, heat absorption occurs. In the original design, to vaporize LPG and to prevent from icing in the wall of the vaporizer is done by circulating engine coolant surround the vaporizer (Figure 1). Related to this study, the test results show that the LPG temperature after the expansion valve is below 0°C of all composition, except the last sample. It provides an opportunity to vaporize LPG with ambient air to produce cooling effect (qev) for cooling the car's cabin. Enthalpy calculation from LPG stream based on experimental data is presented in Figure 8.

Figure 8. Entalphy (h) during the discharging process Thus, the potential cooling effect from LPG vaporizer can be estimated by enthalpy values (h) as shown in Figure 8. Referring to Masi [7], the LPG flow rate of 1998 cm3 engine through engine speed of 1000-6000 rpm is 1 - 7 g/s. Assuming that the heat released from air stream is equal to the heat absorbed for evaporation LPG, potential cooling effect can be calculated by 𝑞𝑒𝑣 = 𝑚̇ (ℎ3 − ℎ1 ). 𝑞𝑒𝑣 is potential direct refigeration in kW, 𝑚̇ is LPG flow rate g/s. ℎ3 is the entalphy in P3, T3 (exit evaporator) in kJ/kg. Finally, ℎ1 is the entalphy in P1, T1 (enter expansion valve, ℎ1 = ℎ2 ) in kJ/kg. The potential cooling effect of LPG vaporizer during the discharging process is presented in Figure 9.

1 The final aim Why does change in composition of discharging importance not clearly state its relevance 2 • Specifications / composition of LPG is not explained
• The pressure is not clear whether the absolute or gauge
Revision/Changes We have added the description on the result and discussion, includes: 3.1. Effect on Energy Combustion and CO2 Emission 3.2. Effect on Potential Direct Refrigeration The spesification/ composition of LPG used in this study we have added at the end of the Introduction section (page 5). Pressure measurement has been clarified as a "gauge pressure". This statement is placed on point 2.2 (Temperature and pressure measurements)
................................. Meanwhile, LPG pressure (in gauge) before and after expansion valve was recorded by PSAN pressure transducers.
• How to measure and maintain the flow rate constant?
We use a flow meter for monitoring LPG flow rate. However, the actual flow rate is calculated by dividing LPG weightt loss to discharging time.
• No measurement uncertainty
The purpose of this study was to investigate the composition of LPG during the discharging process. As it is described in the methodology section, the temperatures are recorded only for monitoring the physical property of LPG. This is to

ensure that the samples are taken in the same physical form. 3
Why samples were taken every 2 kg of weightt loss but the results are expressed in time ?
There was an error in the graph on the first draft. Now, it has been revised. We attach the measurement data at the end of this paper.
If the LPG mass flow rate is constant , Why does time result is not constant 4 Why in sample 1 (S1) more contain butane discharging;
Propane, propene, and butane are non-polar molecules. The atomic bonds in propane, propene, and butane are only C-H and C-C. Electron negativity of carbon (C) and hydrogen (H) is almost the same, 2.5 for C and 2.2 for H. Therefore, the CH bonds in propane, propene, and butane are almost perfectly covalent. Considering that this test is static in LPG tank with deep-tube, where the LPG tank does not receive the shock, the molecular weightts and density are the closest reason to explain this phenomenon. Molecular weightt of propane, propene, and butane are different, which are 44.1, 42.1, and 58.1, respectively. Then, the density of liquid propane, propene, and butane in the pressurized cylinder of 0.6 MPa and 28°C taken from REFPROP-NIST are 501.9 kg/m3, 516.2 kg/m3, and 578.9 kg/m3, respectively. In the static tank, butane molecules would tend to be under propane and propene molecules because of its density. (This description has been presented in the result and discussion section)
At the Pressure P2 is not far from the atmospheric pressure, T2 temperatures far below boilng point butane ?
This is because none of the samples in the form of pure butane. We took an example on the sample 2 (69 %propane and 31% butane). The simulation results with REFPROP at 0.3 MPa

It is unfortunate that the most important part of a paper is the weakest part of this manuscript. There is no analysis of the linkages between the results obtained with those expressed in the introduction. For example, no relationship is describe between the composition of LPG obtain during discharging with engine performance and exhaust emissions.
With more than 20 references (half of them are research publication within the last 5 years), I think it is very adequate.
Aadditional comments : A better quality paper will be produced if supported by the analysis of influence of LPG composition to the combustion energy delivered during discharging process. The analysis can be done by numerical simulation based on experimental data.
We have added an analysis of change in the composition during the discharging process against the energy delivery to the combustion chamber, CO2 emission, and potential direct refrigeration.
