Prof. dr. Saskia Wieringa, directeur IIAV
The IIAV has had an exciting year. We forged strong and inspiring national and international collaborative relationships in the European Feminist Forum, the European Sexuality Resource Center and the Participation of Women as Priority for Science project. We developed important and original heritage projects, such as the interactive, multiethnic website Haar Geschiedenis (Her History) and a number of oral history projects. We also succeeded in further strengthening our relationships with the academic community. Over the past year, we paved the way for the introduction of the IIAV’s third academic chair. The IIAV works within a strong network of similar organizations throughout the world. We know the international community of libraries and archives, women’s information centers, and academic institutes dedicated to the study of heritage, gender and ethnicity, and sexuality. We maintain the in-house expertise and connections to be able to quickly make the relevant contacts in order to establish working partnerships. During our 72-year history, it has been a point of pride for the IIAV to maintain active ties with our users and target groups and to offer thorough knowledge in our many areas of expertise. The IIAV is staffed by gender experts, information specialists, archivists and researchers. We have years of experience in developing and carrying out successful projects both in the Netherlands and internationally, and we have developed unique expertise in data bank construction. In short, we possess an extraordinary wealth of knowledge and skills. If there is something that we

All our expertise and contacts would be of limited value, however, if we did not share our wisdom and collection of heritage with the world. Making cultural heritage available and accessible is a profession in itself, and we also have enormous experience and expertise in this area. Data banks, websites, dossiers, secondary school curricula, international conferences and documentaries – these comprise the broad range of strategies and materials that the IIAV uses in order to disseminate information. We always use a variety of methods to make our collections available, and we work this way in response to the wishes and needs of our users. This combination of networks and expertise makes the International Information Centre and Archives for the Women’s Movement a highly valued partner in national and international projects in the fields of academic research, heritage and historical preservation, women’s information services, and emancipation and empowerment. We are proud of our reputation and track record, and we will make every effort in the coming years to continue to live up to the standard we have set for ourselves.

Uniek instituut voor Nederlandse geschiedenis Trude Maas, bestuursvoorzitter IIAV
As Chair of the Board of the International Information Centre and Archives for the Women’s Movement (IIAV), I believe that the IIAV plays a crucial role in Dutch society.
The IIAV emphatically shares the conviction that it is important to know our history. It is, after all, our job as a heritage institution to collect, preserve and share history with current and future generations. An important question, however, is whose history is being preserved. The national historical canon made an interesting attempt to condense Dutch history into fifty important points, but the canon has also received much criticism since its publication last year. Are Aletta Jacobs, Anne Frank and Annie M.G. Schmidt really the only important women in our nation’s history? Why is so little attention devoted to the Second Feminist Wave, and do we hear the voices of migrant women in the canon at all? The IIAV is dedicated to collecting and preserving women’s history. A society that does not know its own history and roots cannot function well. In order to appreciate where you are in the present and where you want to go in the future, you must know where you come from. There are plenty of indications in contemporary society that people in the Netherlands are increasingly aware of the importance of knowing our own history. A few examples include last year’s introduction of a national historical canon and the popularity of television programs like Andere Tijden (Other Times) and In Europe (a series based on Dutch historian Geert Mak’s book of the same name).
A

mated dialogue with women from diverse ethnic backgrounds, with women activists, with academic researchers and with our partners in many different projects, we make sure that women’s voices from the past and the present are heard, preserved and shared with the world. Through our efforts, the IIAV makes it possible for the other half of Dutch society to get to know its roots. Collecting historical materials is a matter of doing careful research and asking the right questions. In order to be good historical custodians, we engage in ongoing and inspiring dialogues with women’s organizations of all types, with academic researchers and with heritage preservation specialists. This ongoing process of sharing information and asking questions enables us to develop and carry out the projects that will ensure that women’s heritage is preserved and offers a valuable information resource to both current and future generations. In our projects, we combine technical skill and expertise in the subject matter; the process of collaborating with others inspires us further. As a result, our projects are, by definition, both innovative and responsive to the needs and interests of our users, both today and in the future. Some compelling current examples include the multicultural Her History website and the oral history project we have launched, in which the IIAV is constructing a unique archive of video interviews. The IIAV’s important mission is to develop original new ways to collect and preserve women’s unique heritage. In carrying out this mission, we make an essential contribution to the successful functioning of our society – both today and in the future. It is this contribution that makes the IIAV a vital institute and so deserving of its place in our society.

The IIAV specializes in collecting, preserving and sharing the heritage of women and the women’s movement. Each year, more of our extraordinary archives, collections and other services are accessible online, making it easier for our users to find and consult the valuable material that we preserve. Heritage online In 2007, many of our clients took advantage of the growing amount of material that we offer online. The website www.iiav.nl was visited very frequently: we registered 1,341,600 visits. Collectively, all of the IIAV’s websites were visited more than one and a half million times. Our homepage was also redesigned in 2007, making it clearer, more attractive, and more user-friendly and enabling users to navigate the website more easily. In 2008, the website www.iiav.nl will be completely rebuilt to offer even better information access and ease of use. During 2007, we were already hard at work making the preparations for this new website. Treasure trove on the web In addition to making our catalogues and all of our databases searchable online, we also want to make more of our collection’s other treasures and valuable materials accessible online. Among our new library acquisitions, for example, the number of digital publications increased almost 20 percent. The total number of digital publications is now 3,700. The number of subscriptions to digital periodicals increased by 45 percent – to a total of 245. The website www.iiav.nl also offers a treasure trove of visual material. The online catalogue features 29,000 photographs and posters. In 2007, 1,300 new photographs and posters were added to the collection. Many of these images can be viewed online, and they can also be ordered. Naturally, the amount of helpful material available to website users also grew substantially in 2007.

Onze websites Een aantal databases en projecten zijn ook toegankelijk via aparte websites van het IIAV: • www.alettajacobs.org: een website over Aletta Jacobs; • www.sexualityresources.eu: de website van het European Sexuality Resource Center; • www.devrouwbeslist.nl: een digitaal lespakket voor het middelbaar onderwijs over de Tweede Feministische Golf;

killings, the government’s Emancipation Memorandum 2008-2011, equal pay, domestic violence and transgender issues offer an easy-to-use overview of relevant websites, contemporary literature and the information available at the IIAV. They offer a perfect starting point for the user who needs to know more about these and other topics. Our site also regularly featured the addition of new statistics – about women employed in fulltime work, the number of women serving in parliaments, single parent families receiving public assistance, and older women in the labor market. Accessible for everyone Since 2007, the IIAV’s library collection is also accessible via the Digital Library of Amsterdam (Digitale Bibliotheek Amsterdam). It is a convenient way to quickly locate the institutions in Amsterdam that have the information you’re looking for about women’s history. This is also a way for people who do not yet know the IIAV to discover the richness we offer in our collections, archives and databases. This strategy has proved itself to be an enormous success in the case of the Women’s Studies thematic database. Use of this database has increased nearly fourteenfold since it became available on the website of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) in 2006 (www. onderzoekinformatie.nl). Our websites A number of databases and projects are also accessible through other websites maintained by the IIAV: • www.alettajacobs.org: a website about Aletta Jacobs; • www.sexualityresources.eu: the website of the European Sexuality Resource Center; • www.devrouwbeslist.nl: a digital curriculum packet for secondary education about the Second Feminist Wave;

Ask us! With a million and a half visits, our websites have certainly become the principal point of access for most users. But the splendid women’s archives located at Amsterdam’s Obiplein has its own charm and is certainly worth a visit to browse through the library’s rich collection of books and periodicals. Our information specialists are always on hand and ready to answer additional questions. In 2007, we welcomed more than 1,700 visitors to the IIAV. We responded to approximately 1,250 questions that we received by email, and we answered more than 800 questions over the telephone. Approximately 3,000 books were borrowed, and we gave 17 tours. Information on request In 2007, the IIAV also provided customized information in response to many specific requests. We worked together, for example, with history teachers to prepare new classroom assignments for secondary school students. We provided specific information to academic researchers here in the Netherlands as well as from abroad, and we worked with editors from publishing houses, websites and television programs, such as the Dutch VPRO’s television series Andere Tijden (Other Times) and In Europe. We also provided information, tips and advice to the creators of the official Dutch historical canon (http://entoen.nu).

In 2007 vonden ruim 750 duizend zoekacties in onze databases plaats.

women and women from the former Dutch colonies who played, or are still playing, distinguished and prominent roles in society. Customized data banks Many institutes and research and emancipation projects have benefited from our expertise; in fact, the IIAV regularly develops customized databases on request. The new Vrouw en Muziek (Women and Music) database contains the scores and CDs from the former Dutch Foundation for Women in Music; the Foundation’s musical archive has been transferred to the IIAV. This special database was completed in 2007 and was put online in January 2008 (www.iiav.nl.databases.muziek). The IIAV also developed a special database for the collection of the former Clara Wichmann Institute; a substantial number of records were added to this database in 2007. The IIAV worked together with the Nemesis Foundation (Stichting Nemesis) to develop a special website for the periodical Nemesis which dealt with women’s rights and legal issues. All volumes of the periodical are available on the website and can be digitally searched.

An increasing number of treasures… In 2007, the IIAV received many new archives, books, ego documents and visual material. The library acquired around 2,300 new books and theses, and 62 meters of archival material was added to the collection. The visual archive received about 2,450 new photographs and posters. …offered in an accessible way Once we have received them, archives are processed in a variety of ways. This is important not only in order to preserve the material for the future, but also to make it accessible for people interested in using it. Take, for example, the archive of Marie Kamphuis, a pioneer in the professionalization of social work in the Netherlands. An inventory of the archive was made possible with a grant from the Marie Kamphuis Foundation, which manages Kamphuis’ estate. The Foundation transferred the archive to the IIAV and awarded us a grant to publish the inventory of the archive. The resulting booklet contains an extensive biographical sketch, photo-

graphs, a bibliography, and a description of all the archival documents. It is available for purchase from the IIAV’s reception desk and also from our website. As part of the National Library of the Netherlands’ Metamorfoze project, a number of archives were also preserved this year on microfilm. The archives of Wilhelmina Drucker (1847-1925), her publications, and the periodical Evolutie (Evolution), which she founded, were filmed and scanned. We also made a start on the ‘metamorphosis’ of the archive of Johanna Westerdijk, the first female professor in the Netherlands and a member of the Algemeene Nederlandsche Vrouwen Vredebond (Dutch Women’s League for Peace) (1918-1940).

Since 2007, the collection of the Mr. de Graaf-stichting, the Dutch institute that deals with issues related to prostitution, is also available in the IIAV’s catalogue. This development makes the IIAV the place to go to learn more about women and prostitution from 1950 until the present day. Images of women In addition to written material, the IIAV also collects visual images, such as photographs and posters, that tell the story of women and the women’s movement. Gon Buurman, who was known during the 1980s as the ‘photographer of the women’s movement’, has officially donated her archive of black and white images to the IIAV. She has also signed a declaration of intent to transfer the copyright on her photos to the IIAV after her death. In 2007, about half of Buurman’s prints, some 2,000 black and white photographs, and about 40 binders of negatives were transferred to the IIAV. We are in the process of looking for the funds to make this fantastic collection of photographs available online as soon as possible. The photographs from the collection of ZAMI, the multiethnic organization of black, migrant and refugee women in the Netherlands, were put online in 2007, greatly enriching the material that is available in the area of gender and ethnicity. As part of the Video History project Moving Women’s History, many wonderful photographs about the women’s health movement were added to our digitized visual archive in 2007.

Heritage
When women contribute their stories to initiatives like the Video History or Her History projects, they often also give us photographs. Personal photographs make a valuable contribution to the IIAV’s visual collection. Photographs from private collections that depict people and events from the women’s movement in the 1970s and 1980s are always welcome.

Heritage
Events in the spotlight The IIAV regularly organizes interesting readings, lectures, seminars and other inspiring events. The Her History project was definitely a high point (see below). In 2007, the IIAV organized two knowledge quizzes: one during the W.I.S.E.R. festival for women in academia and science in Maastricht, and the other during the Women Inc. festival in Amsterdam (organized together with Mama Cash). Scores of women enjoyed the IIAV’s Women Inc. events. In addition to the women’s rights quiz, the IIAV also sponsored a workshop ‘Verhalen van ver en dichtbij’ (Stories from far and near) as part of the Her History project. The journal LOVER organized a workshop called ‘slijp je tong’ (sharpen your tongue) on writing personal opinion columns; LOVER also organized an informal discussion forum called the ‘feminist living room’. Heritage projects Haar geschiedenis (Her history) The IIAV is dedicated to raising awareness about the issue of race and ethnicity. We are especially proud of the launch of the interactive Her History website (www. haargeschiedenis.nl), a platform that allows women of Surinamese, Indonesian and Moroccan descent to share their stories and histories. In addition to fragments from individual life stories, the website also features short items that sketch important moments in the history of women of Indonesian, Surinamese and Moroccan descent. Visitors to the website can also complete a form that allows them to add their story to the website. The IIAV worked together with the Marokkaanse Vrouwenvereniging Neder land (MVVN, Dutch Moroccan Women’s Organization), Stichting ZAMI (a multiethnic organization of black, migrant and refugee women in the Netherlands) and Stichting Het (voormalige) Indisch Huis (the former Indonesian-Dutch House, an

Making a donation/bequest to the IIAV The IIAV is delighted with the gifts that we received during the year. Material donations such as archives, ego documents, visual materials, books and magazines often make a valuable addition to our collection. But financial contributions are also essential. Innovative and groundbreaking initiatives like the Video History project about the women’s health movement are made possible by contributions to the Aletta Jacobs Fund for Friends of the IIAV. In 2007, the IIAV made the necessary preparations that will further simplify the process of making a financial contribution. The IIAV received a ‘Certificate of No Objection’ from the Dutch Central Bureau on Fundraising. This demonstrates that we are a trustworthy institution and enables donors to make financial contributions online beginning in March 2008. A very special part of the Aletta Jacobs Fund is the Thil ten Cate Fund. Thil ten Cate worked for many years as a volunteer in the IIAV’s archives. When she died, she asked her children to make a gift from her estate to the IIAV of €82,820 and, further, to supplement this with five yearly additional donations of €8,250. A condition of the gift was that the money be used in the archive and library to support projects dealing with women over the age of fifty. The fund will be principally used to finance the oral history project dealing with the Second Feminist Wave. A bequest from your estate can help the IIAV to advance its important work: collecting, preserving and sharing the heritage and history of women from the past and the present.

The IIAV has ‘adopted’ the monument marking Aletta Jacobs’ grave. The monument, which had fallen into disrepair, has been cleaned and the flower boxes have been replanted. A complete restoration of the memorial, however, requires more money.

Welke positie nemen zij in religieuze gemeenschappen?
organization of people with a background in the Dutch East Indies). A selection of the stories and informational items is collected in the book Haar geschiedenis. Vrouwen verhalen van ver en dichtbij
(Her history. Women’s stories from far and near). The IIAV and partners in the Her History project proudly presented the website and book during Her History day on February 17, 2007. Invisible women Men have tended to play the dominant roles in the history of religion, but women have also been involved in religion throughout history. This project used a series of lectures and debates, an exhibition, and a conference to devote attention to the historical and contemporary roles that women have played in religious contexts. What positions have women held in religious communities? And what does religion mean for them personally? The IIAV collaborated with Leiden University (Faculty of Arts), the Stichting Maartens kerk Zaltbommel, Vereniging voor Vrouwengeschiedenis (the Dutch Association for Women’s History) and the Museum Ons’ Lieve Heer op Solder (Our Lord in the Attic) in Amsterdam. As part of this project, the IIAV organized the debate ‘Women and religion: patriarchy or liberation?’ on November 7. In the debate, Jewish, Catholic, Protestant and Muslim women discussed with each other and the audience what motivates women today to affiliate themselves with a religion and the independent relationships that they frequently develop with respect to official religious institutions.

Stories in the first person Khadija al Mourabit studies philosophy and psychobiology; she is a naturalization counselor for the city of Amsterdam and also a poet. She told her story on the Her History website and took part in the storytelling workshop on Her History day.
The voices of the first generation of women to come to the Netherlands from Suriname, Indonesia and Morocco have often not been heard, but it is really important that we know their stories. That is another reason why it is so important that they can anonymously tell their stories on this site. This allows them to reveal stories that they have not told before. These are new voices, and being able to hear them is a valuable gain. The project is also important for the daughters and granddaughters of this first generation of women. We can learn a lot from their rich history, and at the same time, we can add our voices. And our brothers should be reading these stories too!”

Khadija: “I think it’s wonderful that all of the women get to tell their stories in their own words on the website. When someone else writes down your story, the essence of it is often lost. Politicians would be well advised to read these stories carefully. They often profess to speak for and to represent these women, but they forget how incredibly diverse this group of women is.

Since the IIAV’s founding, academic research has always been a core activity. Academic researchers from the Netherlands and abroad are important users of the IIAV’s collections and data banks. We work closely with these visiting scholars to understand better the information that they seek so that we can be responsive to their needs. Modern heritage institutions need to think carefully and critically about what types of historical materials should be preserved for the future. Research and scholarship help us to answer the question of what should be saved and how it should be collected, preserved and made available. A critical and scholarly perspective about society and the emancipation of women and minorities is absolutely essential at an institution like the IIAV. Academic research is also often an excellent method to use in collecting historical materials. The IIAV maintains close ties with researchers in the Netherlands and abroad; the Video History project described below, for example, is being carried out in close cooperation with researchers at Utrecht University (p 27). We also make our commitment to scholarship visible by having established two academic chairs at Dutch universities; a third chair is in the process of being created.
S

IIAV professors The IIAV aspires to create its own academic chair in each of these areas. Since 2002, Dr. Gloria Wekker has been the IIAV professor of Gender & Ethnicity at Utrecht University. In 2007, her appointment was extended until September 2011. In the area of sexual rights, the IIAV also has its own professor; Dr. Saskia Wieringa, the IIAV’s director, is professor of Gender and Women’s Same-Sex Relations in CrossCultural Perspective at the University of Amsterdam (UvA). On April 20, 2007, she gave her inaugural address. A third chair, in the area of women’s history, is being created. The IIAV discussed the creation of the Wilhelmina Drucker chair with the UvA in 2007. It has recently been announced that the third IIAV chair will be created in 2008. IIAV researchers Four academic researchers were formally affiliated with the IIAV in 2007: Dr. Francisca de Haan is professor in the Department of Gender Studies at the Central European University in Budapest, Hungary. Dr. Mieke Aerts is a political historian. One of her research topics has been how to make the IIAV’s collections optimally useful for academic research. Dr. Christien Franken is conducting research on the working relationship between women artists and their models. Finally, Gisela Dütting, M.A., is working on the topic of the promotion of women’s entrepreneurship in Europe as a trend in the labor market. She was also very involved in 2007 in the European Feminist Forum. 2007, American Ellen Dubois, generally regarded as the grand lady of women’s history, gave a lecture about international feminism around 1930 in The Hague. On May 23, Professor Ooi from Malaysia spoke about women’s emancipation in the former British colony Malaya (today part of Malaysia), and on November 6 Japanese researcher Dr. Yu Kojima lectured on female trafficking and migration. Publications: power reading for women Members of the IIAV’s staff were hard at work during 2007 putting together the anthology Traveling Heritages: New Perspectives on Collecting, Preserving and Sharing Women’s History. The collection
contains contributions from 21 Dutch and international experts in the field of heritage and history, including many IIAV staff members. The collection appeared in March 2008. Well-educated, primarily young women who are looking for substantive discussion will see their interests better represented in the new LOVER. In 2007, the journal chose a new motto ‘krachtvoer voor vrouwen’ (power reading for women) and received a complete makeover both in terms of form and content. The journal is taking a sharper and more journalistic tone, while not compromising its substance. LOVER still features articles on contemporary developments and trends in women’s and gender studies, but there is also increased attention in art, culture, politics and society. A new website completes the restyling (www.tijdschriftlover.nl). Dr. Mieke Aerts is politiek historica.
New Perspectives on Collecting, Preserving and Sharing Women’s History.

and international organizations that are passionately dedicated to changing attitudes and beliefs about women, men and their bodies. In 2007, the site added interesting new links every week that connected users to fascinating articles and information. The site is being well used: in 2007, we registered more than 15,000 visits to the site. Oral history project The IIAV is the documentation center that collects the heritage of the Second Feminist Wave. We possess an extensive paper archive, but audiovisual material has largely been missing from the collection. By interviewing women who were involved in the Second Wave movement on video, we are creating new historical documents and new knowledge that offers insights into one of the most influential social movements of the postwar period. The first part of the project, titled Moving Women’s History, deals with the history of the Dutch women’s health movement. In collaboration with Professors Berteke Waaldijk and Janneke van Mens-Verhulst of Utrecht University, Grietje Keller and Josien Pieterse created a short video

presentation and conducted three video interviews in 2007. The interviews plus transcriptions are now available to researchers and others who are interested. The IIAV aspires to reflect the entire breadth of the Second Feminist Wave in video interviews. This will create a unique video archive for future generations of women and researchers who will no longer be able to ask their questions directly to the women who made the movement. Heritage from World War II: women of the National Socialist Women’s Organization Toward the end of 2007, the IIAV embarked on another special oral history project that combines heritage preservation and scholarly research. We plan to make video recordings of the personal testimonies of women who were active members of the Dutch National Socialist Movement (NSB) in the National Socialist Women’s Organization (NSVO) and who were interned or punished under the Bijzondere Rechtspleging (Central Archives for Special Criminal Jurisdiction). The IIAV also intends to interview M. L. Hijink-Rijnders, the woman who directed the camp Fort de Bilt where more than a thousand of these women were interned. In a later phase, we will develop a proposal to interview women who were involved in the Dutch resistance movement. Participation of Women as Priority for Science In 2007, the W.I.S.E.R. festival marked the celebratory conclusion of the second part of the European EQUAL initiative: ‘Participation of Women as Priority for Science’, a project that was dedicated to increasing the number of women in prominent academic positions. In December this project was named one of the five best projects in the EQUAL program. The IIAV contributed

The connection between knowledge and practice
Akke Visser, project director ‘Participation of Women as Priority for Science’ at the Centre for Gender and Diversity at Maastricht University:

“The project’s goal was to ensure that more women make their way into top positions in universities. In order to make sure that it happens, we need to create links between gender specialists, policy specialists and administrators. Administrators and policy experts can help to see that things improve in practice, but they often have very little expertise in gender issues. The IIAV was the perfect partner to help achieve this link between knowledge and practice. The IIAV collects extensive information about women and the advancement of women into higher positions; it also knows how to make this type of information accessible. During the course of the project, the staff at the IIAV provided us with the most current figures, research and literature. During the W.I.S.E.R. festival, when the project was brought to a close, the IIAV made an important contribution that again helped to integrate knowledge and practice. By alternating the presentation of the knowledge quiz with a talk show format in which four women were interviewed about how they had made it to the top, the IIAV provided the audience of policy specialists, researchers, administrators and gender specialists with a wonderful combination of entertainment, inspiration and essential information. The project has an ongoing life in the form of the Vrouw en Wetenschap website (www.vrouwenwetenschap.nl) which we developed together with the IIAV and which the IIAV manages. The IIAV was the obvious partner in this project: it possesses the necessary information and resources to provide the content and technical maintenance for the website.”

IIAV Jaarverslag 2007
Using information for women’s emancipation and empowerment internationally is one of the IIAV’s three core objectives. Projects in this area are often aimed at providing special information services for women. The IIAV works together with partners throughout the world to ensure that women have access to information that is relevant in their lives. The Iranian news site Shahrzad News is a good example. Through the training sessions given by the Women’s Information Technology Transfer project (WITT), women learn how to use ICT as a strategic resource in their work. The IIAV is also the seat of the secretariat of the international Know How Conference, an event held once every four years that is dedicated to exploring and discussing all facets of women’s information services.
Emancipation and empowerment projects European Feminist Forum The European Feminist Forum is a forum that brings together women and women’s organizations from all over Europe to exchange thoughts and ideas about a coordinated strategic feminist agenda. About 3,200 women and men from every corner of Europe participated in this project during the past year. They used the Forum’s website, for example, to discuss issues like the European labor market, migration, and abortion laws. The dialogue unfolded chiefly on the interactive website www.europeanfeministforum.org. Affinity Groups, devoted to thematic issues, were used to organize the discussions. In addition to meeting each other in virtual space, European Feminist Forum events and workshops were organized in Madrid, Berlin, Dagomys (Russia), Cracow, Sarajevo, Stockholm, Warsaw and Brussels. Women’s Information Technology Transfer (WITT) The WITT project is an international collaboration in the area of electronic information services for and by women. WITT sponsors training sessions in building websites and

“The Islamic scholars that we interviewed don’t always agree with each other”, says Fatos Cergel (1980). “But they all believe that people should be able to differ, and they cite the prophet Mohammed: differences of opinion are a blessing. In fact, that is the name that we used for our DVD about women, citizenship and Islam.”
Emancipation and empowerment
information systems and in the use of open source software. In 2007, WITT made the decision to continue giving trainings but to use a simpler method than in the past. A training kit was also created this year using WITT trainers’ years of experience in this field. Individuals taking part in a WITT training receive a free copy of the kit, but it is also available for purchase on the website (www.witt-project.net). Shahrzad News Shahrzad News is an independent feminist Farsi (and English) language news service for women in and outside Iran (www. shahrzadnews.org). In 2006, the IIAV launched this project with two parters: Dokhtarak and Radio Nederland Training Centre. Journalists were trained, an office was established, and a website was built. The IIAV provided information each month about new literature and websites, as well as news about women in Iran and the Middle East and Iranian women in the diaspora, to support Shahrzad News’ editorial staff and journalists. The project was completed at the end of 2007. Liberal Islam Islam also has a liberal face, and it is high time to become acquainted with it and to make sure that it is exposed to a broad audience. Together with the production company Fatusch, the IIAV is working to establish a video database about liberal Islam. The videos feature liberal Muslim scholars discussing their ideas about gender and sexuality. In a number of countries, documentaries will be made with the assistance of local women’s groups. In these projects, Muslim scholars will be interviewed on subjects such as polygamy, sexual mutilation, marriage and homosexuality. In addition to the Netherlands, colleagues in Somalia, Bangladesh and Indonesia are also involved in this project. In 2007, Fatusch produced a DVD for Dutch groups called ‘Verschil van Mening is een Zegen’ (‘Differences of Opinion are a Blessing’). In 2008, funding for a continuation of this project will be solicited.

Surprising results
Verrassende resultaten
Gisela Dütting, researcher, member of the steering committee for the European Feminist Forum and coordinator of the Forum’s Affinity Groups:
“The European Feminist Forum provided plenty of interesting and surprising discoveries. We learned a lot, for example, about the people who feel they are – or aren’t – part of the feminist movement. We received significant response from young Imazighen (Berber) women from throughout Europe. They are part of a very active emancipation movement and think it’s really important that their issues are included in a European feminist agenda. Artists from all over Europe were another group of surprisingly active participants. Just as with the Imazighen, this group was not composed exclusively of women. Men also took part in the artistic discussion forums, and queer theory was an important part of the discussions.
I was personally really interested in following the economic discussions. There are a number of groups in Europe that conduct research on the European labor market from a feminist perspective. They look at factors that promote economic insecurity, such as flexible contracts and salaries. It was very interesting and useful in my own research about independent women entrepreneurs in Europe. The fact that women work as entrepreneurs is, after all, often inspired by economic insecurity, while, at the same time, being an entrepreneur also exposes them to economic insecurity. As a result, the European Feminist Forum has not been important just for the emancipation and empowerment of women in Europe. It has also generated a lot of very valuable information for researchers. At the moment, we are working on a publication that will compile the results of the Forum’s discussions.”
