12
Ezek felderítésére több európai uniós együttmőködés is indult.
13
ak. A fragmentáció lövedékion-töltéstıl való nagymértékő függésére is szeretnénk magyarázatot találni. Ennek érdekében elméleti csoportokkal együttmőködve szeretnénk kísérleteinket szervezni. A molekulatöredékek megfigyelésén kívül az ütközésekbıl kilépı elektronok energiaspektrumából a különbözı Auger-folyamatok szerepére szeretnénk fényt deríteni, valamint a negatív ionok, különösen a hidrogénion képzıdésének tanulmányozását is tervezzük fıleg a biológiai alkalmazások szempontjából legfontosabb vízmolekula céltárgy esetében. Nagyobb energiákon is tervezünk kísérleteket, a Braggcsúcsnak megfelelı energia körüli tartományban (néhány száz keV/u), ahol a lineáris energiatranszfer a legnagyobb a szövetekben. A DNS-károsító, különbözı specifikus folyamatok hatáskeresztmetszetei ettıl eltérı energiákon maximalizálódhatnak, amelynek részleges felderítéséhez tervezett kutatásaink nagyban hozzájárulhatnak.

Tudományos eredményeim összefoglalása
Lézerplazmák vizsgálata Diplomamunkám során nagyintenzitású lézerek szilárdtestekkel való kölcsönhatását vizsgáltam. Tapasztalatokat szereztem a spektroszkópia, a plazmafizika és a femtoszekundumos excimer lézerek területén. Ultraviola lézerimpulzus által szilárd testek felületén keltett lézerplazmák tágulásának sebességét mértem meg a plazmáról viszszaverıdött lézerimpulzus spektrumának tanulmányozásával. Ezek a vizsgálatok a lézerplazmában történı felharmonikus keltés kutatásának keretében történtek, a jelenség körülményeinek tisztázására. Az eredményekrıl nemzetközi szakfolyóiratokban számoltunk be [1,2].
Elektronbefogási (töltéskicserélıdési) folyamatok ion-molekula ütközésekben Doktori képzésemet 1999-ben kezdtem Ubbo Emmius ösztöndíjasként Hollandiában. Ennek keretében lassú ionok molekulákkal történı ütközésének kísérleti vizsgálatát végeztem a Groningeni Egyetem egyik kutatóintézetében (Kernfysisch Versneller Instituut (KVI)). A mérések molekuláris gázjet-target segítségével történtek keresztezett nyaláb elrendezésben. A mért adatok alapján az üstökösök He I és He II Lyman-alfa sugárzását modelleztem [6].

Ionterelés szigetelı nanokapillárisokkal Ionok és szilárdtestek felületének kölcsönhatása során számos jelenség fellép. Az ionok a felület közelébe érve elektronokat fognak be magasan gerjesztett állapotokba és úgynevezett üreges atomok jönnek létre. A szilárd testbe becsapódva azonban ezek szerkezete megváltozik. A nagy átviteli arány a kapillárisok hosszúkás alakja miatt is meglepı volt, a hossz – átmérı arány kb. 100, a kapillárisok tipikus átmérıje néhány 100 nm. A jelenséget a kapillárisok falának elektromos feltöltıdése okozza. A többszörös terelıdés miatt a kijutó ionok átlagos szöge kissé oszcillál a kapilláris tengelyének iránya körül. A folyamatot az elsı ábrán szemléltetjük. Mindamellett, hogy az önszervezı folyamat megértése érdekes fizikai probléma, a jelenség alkalmazásokban is korán szerepet kapott. Például, elvékonyodó üvegkapillárisokat biológiai minták, sejtek ionbesugárzásánál használnak abból a célból, hogy a minták egy adott, kicsiny helyére irányítsák a sugárzást 1. Ábra Az ionterelés jelensége. [e].
20
Ezeket a méréseket szintén ionspektrométerrel végeztük. A döntési síkban felvett szögeloszlások idıfüggésében oszcilláló viselkedést figyeltünk meg, amely az egyensúly beállta elıtt a kapillárisokban idılegesen kialakuló, feltöltött szigeteknek köszönhetı. Nagy eltérések mutatkoztak a terelési tulajdonságokban a két anyagot összehasonlítva. Késıbb a semleges komponenst teljesen semlegesítıdött lövedékekként tudtuk azonosítani.
Hasonló vizsgálatokat PC anyagú kapillárismintáknál is végeztünk [21]. A mérési eredmények kiértékelésében, értelmezésében én is részt vettem.
22
A fragmentációban fellépı anizotrópiákat különbözı molekuláknál tanulmányoztuk. H2O, CH4, C6H6, H2S molekulák széttöredezıdését vizsgáltuk N6+, O7+ hidrogénszerő ionokkal való ütközések során a 15-70 keV-os ütközési energiatartományban. A fragmentumok energiaspektruma hasonló volt ahhoz, amit a nagyenergiás ütközéseknél kaptunk, de nagyobb fragmentumenergiánál is megjelentek csúcsok a sokszoros elektron befogási folyamatoknak köszönhetıen, amelyek lassú nagytöltéső ionokkal való ütközésekben nagy valószínőséggel játszódnak le. Energiafüggı anizotrop spektrumokat találtunk a fragmentumok eloszlásában minden vizsgált molekulánál. Ezek többnyire a lövedék utóhatásainak, illetve direkt mag-mag ütközéseknek tulajdoníthatók. Kutatásainknak váratlan eredményei is voltak. Ezek autoionizációs folyamatokhoz vezetnek, megváltoztatva a molekula töltésállapotát a Coulomb robbanás elıtt. A megoldást kinematikai számolás alapján sikerült megtalálnom, miszerint ezek a csúcsok negatív hidrogén ionoknak köszönhetıek, melyek a lövedékrıl, illetve aceton esetén, a lövedékrıl és a céltárgyról is származnak. A vizsgált ütközési energia a Bragg-csúcson túli behatolási mélységhez tartozó energiáknak feleltethetı meg, ezért a negatív ionok termelıdése fontos szerepet játszhat ionterápiás alkalmazásoknál. Hasonló ütközési rendszerekben eddig csak pozitív ionok emisszióját azonosították [d,f]. A kutatás új fontos reakciócsatornák bevezetéséhez is elvezethet a radiolízis tanulmányozásában. Ezekbıl a megfigyelésekbıl következtetni tudtunk a semlegesítıdés módjára.

Energetic H- emission in collisions of H-bearing molecules and molecular ions Emission of negatively charged particles has been investigated in collisions of 7-keV OH+ ions with Ar atoms and acetone molecules. In addition to electron emission, the formation of H– anions was observed in both collision systems. According to a kinematic analysis, these hydride anions were produced in close atom-atom collisions. The results obtained with Ar provide the demonstration that a negative hydrogen ion can be emitted with large kinetic energy when a positive H-bearing molecular ion suffers a binary collision with a single atomic center. In the case when the hydroxyl cation collides with an acetone molecule, beside this process, emission of H– ions was observed in a wide range of velocities, by detachment of H-centers from the target. The presently observed routes for formation of H– are of potential interest for a detailed description of the collision events in the interstellar medium and planetary atmospheres. A non negligible H– production in biological tissues could be relevant for ion therapy and for radiolysis in general.

Low-Energy State-Selective Charge Transfer by Multiply Charged Ions G. Lubinski, Z. Juhász, R. Morgenstern, and R. Hoekstra KVI Atomic Physics, Rijksuniversiteit Groningen, Zernikelaan 25, NL-9747 AA Groningen, The Netherlands (Received 6 July 2000) We present a combined rf-guided ion beam and photon emission spectroscopy method, which facilitates state-selective charge-transfer measurements at energies of direct relevance for astrophysics and fusion-plasma diagnostics and modeling. Ion energies have been varied from 1000 eV兾amu down to energies as low as 5 eV兾amu. Absolute state-selective cross sections have been obtained for He21 and N51 ions colliding on molecular hydrogen. Orders of magnitude differences are found between theory and the present results. This indicates clearly that such data are valuable as benchmarks for the necessary advancement of theoretical descriptions. DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevLett.86.616

From this it is clear that the photon emission spectrum can be regarded as a “fingerprint” of the nl-stateselective electron capture processes. Often temperatures in astrophysical and fusion (divertor) plasmas are in such a range that the interactions proceed with kinetic energies in the range of 0.1 to 100 eV兾amu. In order to use the information contained in the intensity and spectral distribution of the light it is necessary to quantitatively understand the underlying processes [1]. For example, because of its profound impact on the Jovian magnetosphere, the plasma torus of Jupiter at the orbit of its moon Io has been studied extensively by both earth-based visible light spectroscopy and rocket-based (Voyager) vacuum ultraviolet spectroscopy. However, attempts to determine basic Io torus properties from these observations have not yet succeeded due to the deficiencies in the modeling. A major drawback is thought to be the inaccuracy of theoretical cross sections for state selective electron capture by multicharged ions (charge states 2 to 5 [2]). A similar situation is encountered in the description of vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) emission from the tails of earth-passing comets such as Hale-Bopp and Hyakutake [3–5]. The emission results from electron transfer between multicharged solar wind ions (O, He, and Ne) and neutrals in the cometary tails. Accurate knowledge of the underlying processes would not just allow for explaining the observations but might enable the use of the VUV emission as a diagnos-
tics tool for charge state and flux distributions of the solar wind ions. High resolution soft-x-ray and VUV spectra are expected to become routine with the Chandra and XMM (X-ray Multi-Mirror) observatories in operation. When neutral particles are approached by multiply charged ions they become strongly polarized, leading to a mutual attraction which increases with the charge state of the ion. At collision energies above some 10 eV兾amu this hardly influences the interaction dynamics. At lower energies it has dramatic consequences. It means that the collision trajectories are strongly influenced and that large impact parameters can result in relatively small distances of closest approach. This implies that cross sections for electron transfer strongly increase with decreasing collision energies. In a classical approach the electron capture cross sections increase with the charge state of the ions and inversely proportional to the velocity. Quantum mechanically even more interesting features are predicted to occur which are connected with the so-called orbiting resonances: At specific collision energies charge transfer proceeds via discrete rovibrational states of the transient molecular ion [6]. In general the numerous theoretical predictions of state-selective charge transfer cross sections well below 1000 eV兾amu could be tested only partly or not at all. Furthermore, different calculations are frequently not in accordance with each other. A typical example is electron capture by O31 (e.g., [7]) deriving its interest from the use of OIII emission to determine properties such as temperature and density of planetary nebulae and HII regions. We present an experimental method, which facilitates state-selective charge-transfer measurements at energies of direct relevance for astrophysics and fusion-plasma diagnostics and modeling. The method combines the technique of rf ion guiding with crossed-beam photon emission spectroscopy. A schematic layout of the setup is depicted in Fig. 1. Details of the experiment and experimental procedures are presented elsewhere [8]. Briefly, ions extracted at 3.5 kV from the electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) ion source installed at the KVI atomic physics facility are injected via a five-element lens system into a rf

Charge transfer dynamics at low energies is not only interesting from a fundamental atomic physics point of view, but, in practice, it is highly relevant for the charge state balance and light emission of plasmas. A prominent photon source is electron capture by multiply charged ions Aq1 from neutrals B, because mainly excited states A共q21兲1 共nl兲 are populated (the electron is captured nearly resonantly), which subsequently decay through photon emission. multipole ion guide [9], in our case an eight-pole system. The method of rf multipole ion guiding was pioneered by Teloy and Gerlich [10] for singly charged ions and for the first time applied to multicharged ion beams by Okuno et al. [11]. Our rf octopole is a far more open system to allow for injecting a neutral target beam and observing the photon emission resulting from charge-transfer reactions. Because of possible field penetration, the openness of the system prevented the standard usage of rods as rf poles and special shaped, rigid 10-cm-long poles were designed and made by spark erosion. The energy at which the ions interact with the target is defined by the difference between the source potential and the dc potential at which the octopole is floated (plus an offset due to the plasma potential of the source, ⬃15 V [8]). Down to a beam energy of basically 0, the ion beam can be guided through the system without intensity loss. However, there is a lower limit for performing welldefined experiments which is set by the energy spread of the primary beam. For our ECR ion source typical spreads are of the order of 5 3 q eV [8]. For N51 ions this translates to an energy spread ⬃1.6 eV兾amu. This sets the lower limit to ⬃5 eV兾amu. In combination with a source from which ions are extracted with smaller energy spreads experiments can be performed at lower energies. As such a source, a recoil ion source might be considered which can produce cold ions (⬃0.1 eV兾amu [12]). The photon emission following charge-transfer reactions can be observed by two monochromators on opposite sides of the interaction region. The positioning is similar to the one used previously in our lab (e.g., [13]). The VUV spectrometer, which is used in the present experiments, covers a spectral range from 5 80 nm and is mounted under the double-magic angle to cancel polarization effects. The VUV system is calibrated absolutely on wavelength and sensitivity by cross-reference measurements on systems with well-known cross sections [13]. The spectrometer is equipped with a position-sensitive detector detecting a spectral range of almost 20 nm in one measurement. To show the potential of the method we discuss results which were recently obtained for the He21 -H2 and N51 -H2

collision systems. Inelastic collisions of He21 have attracted a lot of attention in connection with the modeling of He ash removal in the divertor region of tokamaks [14]. A particular point of interest is the charge state of the helium. If it is readily neutralized it is no longer magnetically confined and it may diffuse back into the core plasma thereby deteriorating the plasma. Total charge changing cross section measurements [15] showed that while being of the same order of magnitude around 0.5 keV兾amu, twoelectron capture dominates over the one-electron transfer processes by a factor of 50 around 10 eV兾amu. Dominance of two-electron capture over one-electron capture is very rare (to our knowledge the only other system is C41 -He). Although underestimating the total charge changing cross sections by a factor of 2, molecular orbital (MO) calculations in the energy range of 10 1000 eV兾amu (Shimakura et al. [16]) gave the correct ratios between single- and double-electron transfer. In addition the MO calculations predicted that at energies below 100 eV兾amu where two-electron capture dominates, single excited He共1s3l兲 states are populates. The strong population of these He共1s3l兲 states has been invoked to explain the anomalously intense HeI共1s3l ! 1s2l 0 兲 emission observed when helium plasmas are in contact with cold hydrogen molecules (e.g., [17,18]). Figure 2 shows some representative spectra for He21 -H2 collisions at energies in the range of 4000 down to 8 eV兾amu. Two strong peaks are observed at 60.8 and 58.4 nm. The peaks result, respectively, from the second order of the HeII共2p ! 1s兲 transition at 30.4 nm (60.8 nm, labeled as II-a) and the HeI共1s2p ! 1s2 兲 transition (58.4 nm, labeled as I-a). Note that transition II-a originates from one-electron capture while I-a is due to two-electron capture. It is seen that dominance of either of the peaks swaps from peak II-a at high energies to peak I-a at low energies. This seems to confirm that at energies below ⬃100 eV兾amu two-electron capture dominates over one-electron capture. The HeI共1s2p ! 1s2 兲 line emission cross sections follow the same energy dependence as the total two-electron capture cross sections of Okuno et al. [15] and Shimakura et al. [16] but are smaller by a factor of 10 and 5, respectively. In line with theory this implies that capture into He共1s2p兲 is just a weak two-electron capture channel. However, in contrast to the MO calculations the He共1s3l兲 states are barely populated: there is no appreciable intensity at the position of the HeI共1s3p ! 1s2 兲 transition (53.9 nm); see Fig. 2. It is off note that the HeI共1s3p ! 1s2 兲 is by far the strongest decay channel of the HeI共1s3p兲 state; i.e., it has a branching ratio of 97% [19]. In addition capture into the He共1s3s兲 and He共1s3d兲 states is included in the HeI共1s2p ! 1s2 兲 emission because they decay to the He共1s2p兲 state. From this it is concluded that two-electron capture proceeds mainly into the He共1s2 兲 ground state or the He共1s2s 1 S兲 metastable state. In our opinion the latter 617

example, around 10 eV兾amu the measured N41 共3s兲 cross sections exceed the theoretical ones by almost 4 orders of magnitude. Instead of a virtually closed channel, the N41 共3s兲 state turns out to be the main charge transfer channel. For the N41 共3p兲 and N41 共3d兲 states the deviations are smaller. However, they are much larger than one would expect, for in the 0.5 20 keV兾amu energy range one finds good agreement between experiments and all kinds of theories (e.g., [20]). To get at least an intuitive idea about the possible reasons for the discrepancies we will discuss the primary
FIG. 2. VUV spectra from He21 -H2 collisions at energies ranging from 4000 eV兾amu down to 8 eV兾amu. Indicated are the following peak positions: II-a: second order of the HeII共2p ! 1s兲 transition at 30.4 nm; II-b: second order of the HeII共3p ! 1s兲 transition at 25.6 nm; I-a: HeI共1s2p ! 1s2 兲 transition at 58.4 nm; I-b: HeI共1s3p ! 1s2 兲 transition at 53.9 nm.
state seems the most likely, since the total amount of energy needed to remove the electrons from H2 molecules is 50.8 eV (assuming Franck– Condon-type transitions). This should be compared with the binding energies of the He共1s2 兲 and He共1s2s 1 S兲 states which are 79 and 58.4 eV, respectively. In addition from the potential-energy curves of the He21 -H2 system it is seen that the He共1s2 兲 state can be populated only at small impact parameters [16]; therefore a large cross section is unlikely. Next to hydrogenlike ions He-like ions are the most commonly used highly charged ions in theoretical collision studies (e.g., [20]). To show the value of the method to produce benchmark data for such collision systems, results for N51 -H2 are presented in Fig. 3. collision process in terms of the extended over-the-barrier model [25]. In the framework of this model it is assumed that on the ingoing way of the collision the H2 electrons subsequently transit the potential-energy barrier between the molecule and the N51 ion. It is calculated that the leastand most-bound electron can transit the barrier at internuclear distances of 9.3 and 6.6 a.u., respectively. After the transitions the electrons occupy transient 共NH2 兲51 molecular states within the joint potential-energy well of the collision partners. For impact parameters 6.6 # b # 9.3 only one electron becomes molecular, while for b , 6.6 both electrons are active. The corresponding geometrical cross sections are, by coincidence, of similar magnitude, i.e., 4 3 10215 cm2 . On the way out of the collision the electrons, which became molecular, are redistributed over the projectile and target. The electrons will populate states around the resonant transition energies. For oneelectron processes 共6.6 # b # 9.3兲 the resonant energy lies in the gap between the N41 共n 苷 4兲 and N41 共n 苷 3兲 levels. Since the population distributions, the so-called reaction windows [25], become narrower with decreasing collision energy it is to be expected that the cross sections get smaller at lower energies as seen from Fig. 3. For the two-electron processes 共b , 6.6兲 it is found that the strongest bound electron can near-resonantly populate the N41 共3s兲 state while recapture of the loosely bound electron by the hydrogen target is resonant with the ground state of the H2 1 molecule. In this way two-electron processes lead to one-electron capture. Only a small fraction (5%–10%) of the geometrical cross section for two-electron processes suffices to explain the measured one-electron capture cross sections. Therefore, we propose that the differences between theory and experiment (cf. Fig. 3) are due to two-electron processes, implying that models should include these processes in the calculation of one-electron capture cross sections. In conclusion we developed a combined rf-guided ion beam and photon emission spectroscopy method to measure state-selective charge-transfer cross sections at energies of direct relevance for astrophysics and fusion-plasma diagnostics and modeling. As examples the systems of He21 and N51 ions colliding on H2 have been discussed. The ion energy has been varied down to energies as low as 5 eV兾amu. In combination with a recoil ion source, the energies might be lowered much further to approximately 0.1 eV兾amu. Unexpected large differences (orders of magnitude) with theory have been observed implying that the present and future measurements

a b s t r a c t In this work, we present double differential ion emission yields measured by the method of fragment ion spectroscopy for collisions of N6+ and O7+ ions with water and methane molecules at 30 keV impact energies. The angular distribution of the fragment ions shows expected post-collision and nucleus– nucleus binary collision effects with the indication of an interplay between Coulomb explosion and binary collision mechanisms. We have found significant differences in the fragmentation patterns of methane for the two projectiles, which may be a signature of strong, resonant capture channels. For triple capture, an unexpected angular distribution has been found for water, which may be attributed to orientation sensitivity of some of the capture channels. Such processes can be highly important for radiation therapy and astrophysics. Ó 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
1. Introduction Fragmentation of small molecules by highly charged ions is an essential process, which takes place in heavy ion therapy and in astrophysical environments. Water molecules are the main constituent of biological tissues and they are prominently present in the atmosphere of comets, moons and planets. Irradiation of biological tissues by highly charged ions, such as C6+ used in radiation therapy, strongly ionizes the water molecules, which may subsequently dissociate creating reactive radicals and ionized molecule fragments. These reactive products are the cause to a large extent for DNA damage and cell death. Therefore, it is of major interest to explore fragmentation mechanisms in ion–molecule collisions. In this paper, experimental fragment ion spectroscopy data are presented for ion–molecule collisions, where N6+ and O7+ ions were used as projectiles and H2O and CH4 molecules as targets. The selected ions are prominent constituents of solar wind minority ions. Methane, beside water, is a very abundant gas in the atmospheres of comets, giant planets and some of their moons. The present collision energies were about 2 keV/amu, which correspond to 630 km/s, a typical velocity for solar wind. At such energies electron capture by the projectile is the dominant process, while direct

ionization is less likely. The captured electrons occupy mostly the highly excited states on the projectile and this leads to characteristic X-ray emission as result of radiative de-excitation. It is widely accepted now, that charge-exchange between solar wind minority ions and cometary molecules is the explanation for the strong Xray emission of comets, which was discovered recently [1]. Since the electron capture processes may lead to the fragmentation of the remaining ionized molecules as well, the solar wind may have significant effects on the chemical processes of the atmospheres of non-magnetized planets and moons such as hydrocarbon formation on Titan [2,3]. The water loss from early Venus’s atmosphere was explained by the intense solar wind emission of the young sun [4]. The present investigation is focused on the angular distribution of the fragment ions created in the Coulomb explosion of the ionized molecules following the charge exchange processes. In the Coulomb explosion model, the observable fragment energies are basically determined by the charges of the fragments and their effective distances in the neutral molecule. In the investigated low energy range, anisotropies are expected mostly due to post collision effects and binary processes of direct nucleus–nucleus interactions [5,6]. Recently, molecular orientation effects were considered as the source for the observed anisotropies in fragmentation of water molecules by highly charged ions [7]. The present study clearly shows that anisotropies due to post collision and binary encounter effects are generally present in the fragment ion

spectra of slow ion–molecule collisions. We observed two significant unexpected effects in the spectra, which we are going to study in more details. Dramatic differences have been found in the fragmentation patterns for the different projectiles 30 keV N6+ and 35 keV O7+. Since both projectiles are hydrogen-like ions with equal velocities (only their electric charge differs by 17%) this can be a signature of strong, resonant capture channels. For the much less symmetric water molecule, an ‘‘anomalous” forward– backward asymmetry (opposite to that expected from the post collision effect) has been found for fragmentation channels following triple capture. This latter finding may be attributed to orientation sensitivity in the capture processes. 2. Experimental The experiments were performed at the ARIBE facility at GANIL in Caen. The N6+ and O7+ ions were produced by a 14 GHz electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) ion source. After charge and mass analysis, the ions were collimated to a diameter of 2 mm, with typical currents of a few tens of nanoamperes. In some cases, 15N6+ isotopes were used instead of 14N6+, to check the effects of possible impurities in the 14N6+ beam. No perceptible differences in the fragment ion spectra were observed for the two isotopes. In the scattering chamber, the beam collided with an effusive gas jet of methane or water. The water vapor was provided by a reservoir, partially filled with distilled water. Particular attention was paid to ensure a high purity of the H2O target. The volume above the water level in the reservoir was pumped out several times before the measurements in order to remove gas contaminants. The base pressure inside the scattering chamber was 5 107 mbar without the target gases. With the working jets, it was set to a few times 106 mbar. The ionic fragments were detected by the electrostatic spectrometer from HMI [8] at several angles between 20° and 160° with respect to the incident beam direction. After checking the target pressure dependence, the spectra were taken at the same pressure for a given target gas. Finally, the spectra were normalized to the number of incident projectile ions. This makes the results of different projectile charges and energies directly comparable, even if absolute cross sections were not determined in this work. Comparison of relative cross sections on different targets is strongly approximate due to the different sensitivity of the pressure measuring gauge for different gases.

(below 20 eV) are less intensive at forward angles (30°). This is attributed to the repelling force of the outgoing projectile, which pushes backwards the flying apart ionized fragments, i.e. to the post collision effect (PCI). Above 25 eV, the emission is nearly symmetric and enhanced around 90°. The corresponding multiple electron capture processes occur at relatively small impact parameters so the direct nucleus–nucleus interaction may play more important role in the collision dynamics here. Above 100 eV at forward angles, shown in Fig. 2 for two impact energies, a peak due to hard collisions between the projectile and the protons of the methane molecules can be seen. For the lower impact energy the peak also appears at lower energy. The positions of the peaks agree with the result of a binary encounter model calculation indicated in the figure. The interaction in this binary process is driven by the two collision centers, while the effects of the other molecular parts are negligible. In such binary processes the
3. Results and discussion Fig. 1 shows the energy distribution of light fragments in the 30 keV 15N6+ + CH4 collision system for three observation angles with respect to the beam direction. In the presented fragment ion energy range the emission is due to protons with a smaller conþ tribution of Hþ 2 ions. The yield of H3 ions is expected to be negligible [9]. Three major structures can be observed in the spectra. The peak around 5 eV is due to double electron capture processes, in which the ionized target molecule dissociates according to the schemes: þ þ CH2þ 4 ! CH3 þ H ; þ þ CH2þ 4 ! CH2 þ H2 :
For identification, we used earlier coincidence experiments on O7+ + CH4 collisions [9]. The observed kinetic energy release of the corresponding fragments was found to be peaked around 5 eV for both processes. At 10 eV, another broader structure can be observed. Its position indicates triple electron capture originated fragmentation according to the simple Coulomb explosion model. The long tale above 20 eV is most likely due to multiple (n > 3) electron capture processes. It is clearly seen that the low energy structures

target is preferably kicked at directions nearly perpendicular with respect to the projectile velocity. The really interesting part is the 25–60 eV energy range, where the fragment energy is determined by the Coulomb explosion mechanisms, but the enhancement at 90° indicates that a strong interplay is formed between the Coulomb explosion and the binary encounter processes. In Fig. 3, results for the 35 keV 16O7+ + CH4 collision system are shown. As a bold difference, the structure centered at the energy of 10 eV is practically missing from the spectra. The other two structures, namely the peak at 5 eV and the multiple capture tail, are present and they are even more (cca. two times more) intensive than for the 15N6+ projectile. This finding shows that the charge of the (H-like) projectile has very prominent effects on the fragmentation mechanisms. A possible explanation is that different capture channels are resonant for the different projectile charges, which may strongly influence the efficiency of the different capture and fragmentation mechanisms in this velocity range. We started a systematic theoretical and experimental study to understand this process. We note here that the angular distributions are very similar in both cases: the peak at 5 eV is enhanced at backward angles and at energies larger than 25 eV a symmetric enhancement centered around 90° is observable, showing again post-collision and binary effects. The fragment ion spectra for water are more structured (see Fig. 4). The identification of the peaks is given by earlier works [7,10]. Here, we focus on the different angular dependencies of the different fragmentation channels. At 6 eV the emission is stronger at backward angles than at forward angles. In the 25– 60 keV range a symmetric pattern appears with an enhancement centered around 90°. These features are very similar to those of the methane systems and again, indicate the presence of post-collision and binary effects. However, the peak close to the 17 eV, which is attributed to protons from the H2 O3þ ! Oþ þ Hþ þ Hþ process [10], shows clearly distinct features. Its intensity is higher at forward angles than at backward angles and maximal around 90°. Moreover, there is a significant peak shift towards higher energies for increasing observation angle. We cannot explain this feature by the previously mentioned effects. One should consider other effects here. The most likely candidate is the sensitivity of electron capture processes on the molecular orientation. We are

going to study this observation in more details by performing coincidence measurements. 4. Conclusions Double differential fragment ion spectra according to the energy/charge ratio and the observation angle has been measured for the collision systems of 30 keV 15N6+ + CH4, 35 keV 16O7+ + CH4 and 30 keV 14N6+ + H2O. In each case, post-collision and binary encounter effects are visible in the angular distributions of the emission of light fragment ions originating from the Coulomb explosions of the ionized target molecules. Significant differences have been found for 15N6+ and 16O7+ projectiles in the fragmentation patterns of methane and an unexpected angular distribution pattern has been found for water. Both findings will be the object of further investigation. N. Stolterfoht Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin f¨ur Materialien und Energie, Glienickerstr. 100, D-14109 Berlin, Germany (Received 16 August 2010; published 23 December 2010) A relatively large yield of neutralized atoms was observed when 3 keV Ar7+ ions were guided trough polyethylene terephthalate nanocapillaries. Time and deposited-charge dependence of the angular distribution of both the guided ions and the neutrals was measured simultaneously using a two-dimensional multichannel plate detector. The yield of neutrals increased significantly faster than that of guided ions and saturated typically at a few percent level. In accordance with earlier observations, both the yield and the mean emission angle of the guided ions exhibited strong oscillations. For the atoms, the equilibrium was achieved not only faster, but also without significant oscillations in yield and angular position. A phase analysis of these time dependencies provides insight into the dynamic features of the self-organizing mechanisms, which leads to ion guiding in insulating nanocapillaries. I. INTRODUCTION
In recent years, increasing interest has been devoted to the guided transmission of ions through insulating capillaries [1–7]. The phenomenon involves the charging up of inner capillary walls, which prevents a significant fraction of the ions getting close to the walls; that is, they mostly preserve their initial charge state during the transmission. This “fully elastic” guiding has been found to be significant in capillaries of different sizes and aspect ratios, made from different insulator materials, in a wide range of impact ion energies and charge states [8–20]. Therefore, it is justified to consider the ion-guiding effect as an example for a self-organizing process. For understanding how such a process develops, the temporal dynamics of the transmission pattern of the guided ions is essential. Recently, systematic works have been started measuring and analyzing the time evolution of the angular transmission profiles [5,6,21–23]. Pronounced oscillations have been observed in the angular position of the ion-transmission profiles, providing evidence for the formation of temporary charge patches produced in the interior of the capillary besides the primary charge patch created in the entrance region [6]. This finding was in accordance with the results of Monte Carlo calculations [7,24–27]. The temporary patches have been found to be important in the pre-equilibrium period, whereas at equilibrium the ions were transmitted along the capillary axis predominantly by the first patch. A prospective way for gathering more information about the development of charge patches is to study the dynamic properties of the guided ions and those of charge-exchanging inelastic collisions simultaneously. This can be provided by the measurement of all ions with all charge states, as well as the neutralized atoms. Various experiments have been performed to study the ions, which leave the capillaries with a lower charge state 1050-2947/2010/82(6)/062903(7)

[1–5,28–36]. The experimental study of neutrals requires more effort so that the available information on neutrals produced in capillaries is less detailed or marginal [5,35–38]. All these experiments show that the total sum of ions transmitted into lower charge states is not more than a few percent of those in the initial charge state. Moreover, the fraction of neutrals has been found to be comparable to the fraction of lower charge states [5,37]. In a recent work, nanocapillaries in Al2 O3 membranes were investigated by ion-impact, and a significant number of particles was detected with a two-dimensional multichannel plate (MCP) detector, which could be identified as neutrals after electrostatic separation [36]. They were observed at all measured tilt angles. Moreover, in contrast to the guided ions, neutral particles appeared almost instantly when the ion beam hit the sample. In this work we investigate capillaries in polyethylene terephthalate (PET) polymer foils. The dynamic properties of the ion transmission are studied in detail, extending earlier works [6,23]. In addition, the angular distributions of transmitted ions and neutrals were recorded simultaneously with a two-dimensional, position-sensitive MCP detector. The development of the neutral and the ion transmission is found to be different. Both angular positions and intensities exhibit rich oscillatory structures with closely linked phase relations. The relative phases of the oscillations provide an insight into the guiding mechanism, especially into the dynamics of the charge-up process.

front of the MCP detector during the whole time when the charge-up dynamics was recorded. An important aspect of the present work is the measurement of neutrals. The amplitude distribution patterns for the detector signals are different for vacuum ultra-violet (VUV) photons and atoms. In the present measurements only the pattern of Ar atoms with same kinetic energy as the primary beam could be observed. Nevertheless, a small contribution of VUV photons due to radiative transitions of captured electrons cannot be fully excluded [42,43]. However, the photons are emitted in the full solid angle, so that only a minor escape probability through the exit opening is expected, while the scattering of the neutralized atoms is strongly directed toward the capillary exit. III. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS AND ANALYSIS
Figure 1 shows an MCP image of the transmitted ions and neutrals acquired after a charge deposition of 150 nC. The positions on the MCP were converted to angular coordinates (θx ,θy ). They represent the angular deviations with respect to the beam (z axis) in the x-z and y-z projections. In this case the total tilt angle of the capillaries was equal to 5.5◦ . The neutrals are emitted in directions close to the capillary inclination. Their position on the MCP was not changed by the electric field, while the ions in the initial charge state (Ar7+ ) were shifted to the right. Ions with charge states lower than 7 should appear between the positions for Ar and Ar7+ . The number of counts, however, was too low to see them as individual peaks. We determined the transmission yields for Ar and Ar7+ by summing the counts within circular areas on the detector surface surrounding the corresponding positions. The radii of the circles were set large enough to include the majority of the signals. Shifting the areas away to signal free positions

polymer capillaries was studied. The ions were provided by an electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) ion source [39], which operated with relatively low (429 V) extraction voltage. The beam was collimated by two diaphragms of 1 mm diameter spaced 20 cm apart before entering the vacuum chamber, where the target sample and the detector were placed. This restricted the maximal beam divergence to ±0.3◦ . Typical beam current was about 200 pA during the experiment. The vacuum level was ∼5 × 10−7 mbar. More details about the experimental arrangement can be found in Ref. [36]. For the present experiments, a PET sample with a capillary density of 4 × 106 cm−2 was used. It was prepared at the Ionenstrahllabor (ISL) in Berlin [40] and was used earlier in a series of experiments where the dynamic properties of the guided ion transmission were studied [6,23]. The thickness of the sample was 12 µm and the capillary diameter was 200 nm. The angular spread of the capillary inclination was estimated to be ∼0.2◦ full width at half maximum (FWHM), which is significantly smaller than the aspect angle of 1◦ . The density of the capillaries implies a geometric opening of 0.12%. Gold was evaporated under 30◦ inclination angle on both the front and the back sides of the PET foil, forming a film of ∼20 nm thickness to avoid a macroscopic charge up of the sample surfaces. The target foil was mounted on a sample holder, which allowed for the alignment in three axial dimensions and around one rotational axis. Thus, the horizontal tilt angle ψ of the capillaries could be varied in order to change the angle relative to the incident beam. The vertical (azimuthal) capillary inclination could not be varied. Due to geometric imperfections this azimuthal angle ϕ with respect to the beam deviated from the ideal 0◦ . Its value was estimated to be equal to the mean azimuthal angle of the transmitted beam in equilibrium guiding condition with respect to the primary beam, which was found to be ϕ ≈ 0.8◦ . The total tilt angle was determined as the root square sum of ϕ and ψ. For ψ > 1.8◦ this means only a small correction (<10%). The target foil was mounted on a circular frame with an inner diameter of 7 mm. By moving the sample holder, the beam was localized on a fresh spot in the foil each time when a new measurement with a different tilt angle was started. Hence, previous charge-up effects could be avoided. The transmitted ions and neutrals were observed using an MCP detector positioned 74 mm away from the target with its sensitive surface parallel with respect to the capillary foil. It was rotated around the same axis as the sample holder by the angle θs , whenever ψ was changed. Thus, the angle θs was set equal to ψ and the capillary axes always pointed to the same spot in the center of the detector. Two-dimensional images were collected in sequences with an acquisition time of 9 s and a 1 s break between them. The integrated beam current incident on the sample, that is, the deposited charge Qd , was recorded in each time interval. It was used to normalize the acquired counts. In earlier studies [31,41] it was found that the charging-up dynamics scales with the deposited charge rather than with the time in a wide beam current range. Therefore, the measured quantities were plotted as a function of deposited charge instead of time. Since, however, beam instabilities were small in the present experiment (less than 10%), the deposited charge can also be regarded as a measure of time. Ions were separated from the neutrals by applying an electric field in

FIG. 1. Two-dimensional angular distribution of the ions transmitted through the capillaries measured by the MCP detector after an amount of 150 nC charge has been deposited on the sample. Ions are separated from neutrals by a horizontal electric field. The capillaries are tilted in the x direction by 5.5◦ . The neutrals (Ar atoms) appear close to this angle. The ions in the original charge state (Ar7+ ) are shifted to the right by the separating electric field and appear around θ x = 16◦ . The contribution of intermediate charge states is negligible.

where Qs is a threshold value and Qc is a characteristic charge constant. Both of them were used as fit parameters. Figure 2 shows that the first Ar7+ ions appeared after the threshold chare of Qs = 13 nC had been deposited on the capillary foil. The fit resulted in a characteristic charge constant of Qc = 118 nC. Similar values were previously obtained for Ne7+ ions [6] with similar beam conditions. Here we draw attention to a remarkable dynamic feature of the guiding mechanism, that is, the clear oscillatory deviation from the exponential function (1), as seen in Fig. 2. This is discussed later. In Ref. [6], indications of such intensity oscillations have also been found. The intensity of the neutralized Ar atoms increases with the deposited charge as well. The fit by Eq. (1) also appears to be a reasonable approximation. However, a significant

the background contribution was determined and subtracted. In order to take into account beam current fluctuations the integrated counts were normalized to the charge deposited at the sample during the acquisition. This process was repeated for each image recorded successively in time. Both the equilibrium states and the time-dependent dynamic effects have been analyzed from the same set of data. The measurements were performed for several tilt angles from 0.8◦ to 8◦ . They essentially show the same features as the example presented here for 5.5◦ . The capability of insulating capillaries to guide ions is referred to as the guiding power. The fraction of transmitted ions at equilibrium generally decreases exponentially with the square of the tilt angle [2,44]. The guiding power can be quantified by the characteristic guiding angle ψc for which the transmission drops to 1/e fraction of its value at zero tilt angle [41]. In the present set of measurements we obtained ψc = 5.5◦ , which fit well in the scaling law presented in [41]. The tilt angle dependence of the transmission for neutrals was found to be very similar to that of ions. Moreover, we obtained practically the same “guiding angle” ψc = 5.6◦ . Under equilibrium conditions (Qd > 350 nC), in the tilt angle range of ψ = 0.7–5.5◦ , the neutral-to-ion yield ratio was practically constant, that is, 1.4 ± 0.1%. At ψ = 8◦ it was somewhat higher, that is, 2.3%. It should be noted that for slow projectiles, the detector sensitivity for the neutral Ar are expected to be lower than for Ar7+ ; therefore, the real neutral-to-ion ratio could be somewhat larger. The widths of the angular distributions for the neutrals in both the x and the y direction were found to reach the value of 2.3◦ ± 0.2◦ FWHM at 40 nC deposited charge and remained nearly constant during the rest of the charge-up process. For ions, the x width did not stabilize within the measured deposited charge region, while the y width became constant after 100 nC at a value of 1.9◦ ± 0.1◦ . Turning to the dynamics of the ion guiding, in Fig. 2, the yields of the detected particles are plotted as the function of deposited charge on the front surface of the target foil Qd for the capillary tilt angle of 5.5◦ . The intensity of transmitted ions is increasing, in accordance with the following approximate function from [6,31]: 0 if Qd < Qc Qd −Qs f (Qd ) = , (1) if Qd Qc f0 1 − exp Qc

difference is that, in contrast to the ions, neutrals can be detected immediately after the ion beam is switched on. However, it needs some charge deposition before the intensity starts to increase more rapidly. The fit of the results for the neutrals yields a threshold value of Qs = 4 nC, though the function (1) does not describe so well this early period. For the characteristic charge constant we get Qc = 33 nC, which is significantly smaller than that for the ions. It clearly shows that the emission of neutralized atoms precedes the transmission of guided ions. It is certainly true for the formation of the first patch at the capillary entrance. Note that at such a large tilt angle the immediate appearance of neutrals can be originated only from the entrance region, where ions impinge on the surface. The mean emission angles of the ions and neutrals were obtained by calculating the first-order moments in θx and θy over the same circular areas, which had been used for determining the yields. The shifts exerted by the separating electric field to the ions were measured by switching the field on and off, and their effects on the mean emission angle were corrected for. The results are presented in Figs. 3(a) and 3(b). Here, only the components along the x axis (the capillary tilt direction) are shown. We note that Figs. 1, 2, and 3 display data originating from the same measurement. Closer inspection of Fig. 1 shows that the angular distributions of the Ar7+ ions exhibit multiple peak structures in accordance with earlier observations [6,23]. As the charge pattern changes during the charge-up process so does the angular distribution of ions, leading to oscillations of the mean emission angle of ions. In the previous work [6], these characteristic oscillations have already been analyzed, where they were attributed to the formation of temporary charge patches developing in the capillary walls.

FIG. 3. Mean emission angles of Ar7+ (a) and Ar (b) transmitted through the capillaries as function of the deposited charge. The tilt angle was 5.5◦ . Panel (c) shows oscillatory deviations of the ion intensity from the fit function (1). The crossings of the horizontal (equilibrium) line with the angle oscillations of the ions are marked by dashed lines.
In the case of Ar7+ ions the mean emission angle strongly oscillates around the capillary tilt angle. For the neutrals, the oscillation is also present, but with smaller amplitude. From Figs. 3(a) and 3(b) a characteristic phase relation is readily seen between the two oscillatory patterns; that is, the angular deviation of the neutrals always precedes that of the ions. The first place of maximum deviation of the neutrals coincides with the starting node of the ion position. The node of the neutrals nearly coincides with the maximum deviation of the ions at around Qd = 30 nC, and this nodeextremum correspondence continues also for higher values of the deposited charge. Although the oscillation slows down, the phase relation between the two angular position curves remains the same during the whole development. This indicates that not only the first, but all the individual patch formations start with the emission of neutrals. The amplitude of the angular oscillation for the ions is slightly increasing in the first three half waves, implying that new charge patches temporarily dominate the ion transmission. After the third maximum at around 160 nC, however (i.e., after
the formation of the third patch), the angular position of the ion peak smoothly approaches its equilibrium position at the tilt angle of 5.5◦ . We note that this oscillation pattern is almost identical with that for Ne7+ projectiles [6]. The amplitude of the angular oscillation for the neutrals starts with a 0.5◦ deviation and decreases during the whole period. In contrast to the ions, the emission of neutrals does not seem to be dominated by the new charge patches. Rather, all the formed charge patches seem to contribute to the neutral emission considerably up to the end of the measured period. In Fig. 3(c) the deviations of the ion yield from the fitting function (1) are shown (in the following referred to as yield), exhibiting more details of the phase relations. The most pronounced of them is that the -yield maxima always appear at around halfway (∼20 nC, ∼50 nC, ∼120 nC) to the maximum angular deviation of the ion peak. The -yield minima, appear also regularly at around halfway back (∼35 nC, ∼80 nC) from the maximum angular deviation. To follow these phase relations, we show in Fig. 4 the geometry of the formation of the first and second charge patches in a capillary. It is expected from Fig. 4, that the yield for the detected ions shows its first maximum when the centroid of the angular distribution of the deflected ions aims at the middle of the exit opening at the angle of ψ + α1 . After passing this -yield maximum, the mean angular deviation of the ions (from the nominal value of the tilt angle) increases close to its maximum value of 2α1 that is geometrically possible. At this maximum angular deviation, however, only a part of the deflected ions reach the capillary exit. A considerable fraction is guided to the opposite side of the capillary, and starts to form the second charge patch. When most of the ions which are deflected by the first patch participate in the formation of the second patch, a minimum appears in the yield. The formation of the second charge patch looks quite similar to that of the first patch outlined before. The corresponding minima and maxima of the yield and their phase relation to the angular deviation curve can be followed in Fig. 3. IV. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION
From the analysis of the data, we have found that the mean emission angle of the ions oscillates backward and forward by the charge patches formed sequentially at both sides of the capillary wall, as has been explained in Ref. [6]. The present

(a) Before charge up, the ions which enter into the surface of the capillary are scattered by the surface layers and neutralized and may escape the capillary. case of 5.5◦ tilt angle at 3 keV ion energy shows the formation of three charge patches during the period of the development of the guiding effect. The patch formation produced a pronounced oscillatory deviation from the exponentially increasing ion intensity. This deviation shows maxima at the deposited charge values, where the ions are deflected by one of the growing charged patches to the direction of the center of the exit opening. The minima of the intensity deviation regularly and closely follow the places for the maximum angular deviations for ions. This can be associated with the formation of the next charge patch at the opposite side of the capillary. Neutrals occurred immediately after the beam entered the capillaries. Their intensity increased rapidly and reached saturation much earlier than that of the ions. There is a remarkable dependence between the yields of neutrals and ions, namely, that the neutrals reach their equilibrium, when the oscillation in the yield shows its last minimum in Fig. 3(c). This is likely the point where the third (and last) charge patch is being developed and starts to deflect the ions to the capillary exit. This indicates that the sources of neutrals are the charge patches in the capillary wall and the development of neutrals stabilizes when the last patch starts deflecting ions. In an earlier work, the possibility of the emission of neutrals from the capillary exit was considered [5]. In the present work we found that neutral emission originates dominantly from the entrance and the intermediate regions of the capillaries. Neutralization of the guided ions at the exit of the capillaries is not expected to contribute considerably to neutral emission. A likely scenario of formation of charge patches that governs the ion guiding and neutral emission based on our present observations is schematically shown in Fig. 5, and is described as follows. At tilt angles as large as 5.5◦ , the formation of the first charge deposition takes a rather long time. At the beginning, all incoming ions hit the surface of the capillary. Neutralization starts above the surface by capturing the electrons of the insulating material [45]. The projectiles partially penetrate into the bulk and suffer a large angle scattering with atomic cores, whereby they are neutralized.
Due to the large angle scattering their escape probability from the capillary is low, but it may result in the weak neutral emission already at the beginning. Later, when the charge patch forms an increasing deflecting field, more and more ions hit the surface at grazing angle. Some of them are deflected without collisions with the surface. The trajectories of such glancing deflections have sufficiently long contact with the surface that charge exchange occurs quite effectively. When the turning point remains below the critical distance [46], where electron capture processes dominate, ions become fully neutralized, without a significant energy loss. The majority of the neutralized atoms directed toward the capillary exit are formed in this above-the-surface neutralization process. Soon after that, the first charge patch starts to guide a considerable fraction of the incoming ions. In this state, some of the incoming ions suffer hard collisions, lose their charge, and compensate the discharge currents (see, e.g., the trajectory marked by s in Fig. 5). Other ions are deflected at a large distance from surface toward the inner part and the exit of the capillary (trajectory marked by g in Fig. 5). These ions keep their initial charge state and contribute to the guided ion transmission. Henceforward, however, ions deflected on intermediate trajectories are expected to contribute to the formation of neutrals (trajectory marked by n in Fig. 5). The formation of the other charge patches developed inside the capillary are expected to be similar. We note that in equilibrium, the first charge patch always plays a key role in guiding and needs a supply of ions for compensating the discharge current. However, the other patches, formed inside the capillary, may change their role or lose their importance during the development of the guiding process. A remarkable property of the studied dynamics is that some of the parameters, which are characteristic for the emission of neutrals, become constant relatively early. Both the horizontal and the vertical widths of the peak of neutrals stop changing at a value of the deposited charge as small as 40 nC. At 80 nC the intensity of the neutrals reaches saturation. On the contrary, the yield of the guided ions and the mean angular positions approach an equilibrium state only at or above 300 nC. The early stabilization of the width of neutrals suggests that neutrals are emitted dominantly within a narrow (grazing) angular range. This can explain why the contributions from the later formed charge patches do not widen the peak of neutrals at an observable level. Neutrals have an important property. Since they are not deflected by electric fields along their way to the capillary exit, they directly report on the places, where they were formed. Therefore, the early saturation of the neutral emission is a remarkable finding, which needs further exploratory work. In summary, two-dimensional angular distributions of the guided ions and the created neutrals were measured for transmission of Ar7+ ions through PET polymer capillaries. The charge-up dynamics was studied at several tilt angles by means of the total intensities and the mean emission angles of both the ions and the emitted neutrals. The deposited charge (or time) dependence of the measured yields and angular positions exhibited rich structures. A relatively large yield of neutrals was found in comparison to that of lower charge state ions, which were below the detection limit.

The interpretation of the present experimental findings is in good accordance with the picture based on earlier experimental works and model calculations, but it goes beyond their level due to the simultaneously measured intensity and angular results for guided ions and neutrals and their phase relations. The main conclusion of the present work is that for any charge depositions, which contribute to the guiding effect, the emission of neutrals occurs before the appearance of the guided ions; that is, the patch formation always starts with the emission of neurals. We outlined a scenario for the patch formation, which includes both neutral emission and ion guiding. This picture is supported by the phase relations
between the yields and angular positions of the transmission profiles for ions and neutrals. We expect that the findings of the present study provide useful information for future experimental and theoretical work.
