NEW EUROPEAN INITIATIVES IN COLORECTAL CANCER SCREENING “BUDAPEST-DECLARATION” Official program during the Hungarian Presidency of the Council of European Union Under the auspices of UEGF, EAGE and the Hungarian Society of Gastroenterology
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second most common newly diagnosed cancer and the second most common cause of death in the EU. There are approximately 436.000 newly detected cases in Europe and more than 200.000 deaths due to CRC each year. CRC is an enormous health and economic burden. Many of cancer-associated deaths could be avoided through early detection by high-quality colorectal screening programmes. The clear advantage of CRC screening is that can detect cancer at an early stage. This can result in a better prognosis with less expensive oncologic therapy and finally, lowers mortality rates. Under the auspices of UEGF, EAGE, Hungarian Society of Gastroenterology and Hungarian College of Gastroenterology the “Budapest Declaration” (2011) will be put forward by European experts in the field of colorectal cancer. This important Meeting is an accepted official scientific programme during the Hungarian Presidency of the Council of European Union. It follows the Munich Declaration (2001), the Brussels Declaration (2007), the Transatlantic Declaration (2009), the Barcelona Declaration (2010), the written declaration of CRC screening, a joint initiative with European Parliamentarians, coordinated by the UEGF, and finally, The European Guidelines for quality assurance in CRC screening and diagnosis. “Budapest Declaration” together with the above mentioned previous declarations aims to urge the national and supranational healthcare decision makers to launch new Europe-wide initiatives to establish high-quality CRC programmes to achieve optimal efficiency in CRC screening. EUROPEAN ASSOCIATION FOR GASTROENTEROLOGY AND ENDOSCOPY
Dear colleagues and friends, The EAGE is one of the founding organizations of the contemporary United European Gastroenterological Federation. It is the aim of the EAGE to present interactive and highly professional teaching events on diseases of the digestive system and to provide aducational exchange platforms to further expand and update the knowledge in Gastroenterology. Diseases of the digestive system are complex and often require a multidisciplinary approach. Our goal therefore is to structure our education in connection with specialists of pathology, radiology, immunology, surgery, oncology, genetics etc. With emphasis on case management as well as specific topics, including aspects of interdisciplinary medicine, we believe that our EAGE postgraduate courses guarantee a well-rounded education in the highly specialized world of medicine. The EAGE offers individual membership through EAGE course participation and members are eligible for a two-year online subscription of the Digestive Disease Publication. Please also visit our website for updates and details. EAGE Council
