EUROP ASSISTANCE VIERT DE 10DE EDITIE VAN DE EUROPESE VAKANTIEBAROMETER De economische crisis heeft minder invloed op de vakantie van de Europeanen Dit jaar vertrekken de Belgen vooral op vakantie om uit te rusten. Ze vertrekken meerdere keren en soms zelfs voor een langere periode. Europ Assistance viert dit jaar de 10de editie van haar Europese barometer voor de zomervakantie1. Deze referentie-enquête peilt bij de burgers van zeven Europese landen2, waaronder België, en wil elk jaar de vertrekintenties van de Europeanen beoordelen, hun favoriete bestemmingen, hun bekommernissen, het budget dat ze aan de vakantie besteden… De tendensen die daaruit naar voren komen, vormen een kostbare hulp bij de voorbereidingen van de talrijke bijstandsaanvragen tijdens de zomer. Hoewel de crisis nog wel merkbaar is in bepaalde aspecten van de organisatie van de vakantie, daalt de invloed ervan wel. 64% van de Europeanen vertrekt deze zomer op vakantie. De Belgen blijven evenveel met vakantie gaan (63%), liefst meermaals en zelfs gedurende langere tijd. 77% van de Belgische gezinnen vertrekt deze zomer met vakantie, dat is 6% meer dan vorig jaar! Terwijl één Europeaan op twee verklaart de vakantie in eigen land te willen doorbrengen, ziet de Belg het anders: 89% van de Belgische vakantiegangers zal in het buitenland verblijven. Europa blijft de bevoorrechte vakantiebestemming voor Europese reizigers. Hoewel de zee globaal gezien de favoriete bestemming blijft, diversifieert de Belg zijn vakantie steeds meer door te kiezen voor zowel een rondreis als voor het platteland en de bergen. Dit jaar heeft de Belg vooral behoefte aan rust en wil hij niet zozeer op ontdekking gaan, wat in 2009 wel het geval was. Dit strookt met de Europese tendens. Het vakantiebudget van de Europeanen blijft stabiel ten opzichte van vorig jaar maar dat van de Belgen stijgt met meer dan 4%. Net zoals voor de Europeanen is het klimaat de belangrijkste keuzefactor voor de Belg en is de gezondheid is zijn grootste bekommernis. Nieuwe trend: 85% van de Belgen boekt zijn vakantie op voorhand. Op dit vlak hebben de Belgen een grote voorsprong op de andere Europese landen. Tenslotte is er nog de onbetwiste toeristische revolutie van het laatste decennium: Internet is het belangrijkste reservatiekanaal geworden. 62% van de Europeanen en 57% van de Belgen boeken hun vakanties via het net!

De economische crisis heeft minder invloed op de organisatie van de vakantie, de Europese reiziger houdt stand Hoewel de effecten van de economische crisis nog voelbaar zijn op verschillende aspecten van de organisatie van de vakantie, toont de 10de editie van de barometer globaal een kleinere invloed van de moeilijke economische context dan in 2009. Voor 42% van de respondenten (-2% vs. 2009) heeft de crisis vooral een effect op het budget. 31% van de Europeanen vindt eveneens dat er ook een invloed is op de keuze van de bestemming (-3%) en de duur van de vakantie (-2%). 29% vermeldt nog de keuze van het type accommodatie (-1%) en 21% de keuze van de transportwijze (-3%). Deze verschillende aspecten lijken in ons land minder beïnvloed te zijn in vergelijking met het Europese gemiddelde. Nochtans heeft de economische crisis een impact op de vakantie van meer dan één Belg op 4. 31% van de respondenten laat ook weten dat ze hun uitgaven ter plaatse aanpassen (restaurants, uitstapjes, aankopen, enz.). Meer dan 6 Europeanen en Belgen op 10 vertrekt deze zomer op vakantie. De effecten van de crisis blijven nochtans wel voelbaar bij de reisintenties van de Europeanen die nog niet hun niveau van 2008 herwonnen hebben: net zoals in 2009 verklaart 64% van de Europeanen deze zomer met vakantie te gaan. Twee jaar geleden was dat nog 67%. De meervoudige vertrekintenties lijden ook onder de slechte sociale en economische context en sluiten aan bij die van 2009 (21% vs 24% in 2008). Dat geldt in het bijzonder voor de Fransen en Britten die respectievelijk met 19% en 34% meerdere keren op reis gaan deze zomer. Twee jaar geleden was dat nog 32% en 42%. In tegenstelling tot de Europese tendens blijft het aantal Belgen dat deze zomer op vakantie vertrekt stabiel in vergelijking met 2009 en 2008 (63%). Het aantal reizigers dat meerdere keren op reis vertrekt stijgt zelfs licht (19% vs. 17% in 2009). 77% van de Belgische gezinnen vertrekt deze zomer met vakantie, dat is 6% meer dan vorig jaar! De Belg heeft dus niet alleen een baksteen in zijn maag, hij zit ook met reizen in zijn hoofd! De voorkeur voor verblijven van gemiddelde duur wordt bevestigd De meeste Europeanen (43%) kiezen voor een reis van 2 weken, een verblijfsduur die sinds 2008 stijgt (+2% vs 2009, +4% vs 2008). Maar wie gaat het langst op vakantie? De Fransen (39% vertrekt voor 3 weken en meer)! De Italianen geven dan weer de voorkeur aan korte trips (42% vertrekt voor 1 week). In lijn met het Europese gemiddelde blijven de Belgen de voorkeur geven aan een reis van 2 weken (40%). Maar ze kiezen steeds meer voor een vakantie van 3 weken of langer (36% vs 27%). Deze lange verblijven zijn sterk gestegen in vergelijking met vorig jaar (+10%). De Franstaligen kiezen meer voor lange vakanties dan de Nederlandstaligen waar de korte en lange periodes egaler verdeeld zijn.

De helft van de Europeanen brengt zijn vakantie door in eigen land 80% van de Europeanen vertrekt op vakantie naar het oude continent en heeft daarbij een voorkeur voor de landen van het Middellandse Zeegebied, met op kop Italië (19%), Spanje (16%) en Frankrijk (16%). 48% van de Europeanen verklaart dan weer in eigen land te willen blijven, onder meer in Frankrijk (60%). Daarentegen zal slechts 11% van de Belgen zijn vakantie in eigen land doorbrengen, maar deze tendens is sterker zichtbaar in het noorden van het land (14%) dan in het zuiden (6%). 84% van onze landgenoten wil naar een Europese bestemming vertrekken (+5% vs. 2009). Het land bij uitstek voor een gezinsvakantie, Frankrijk, blijft meer dan ooit de favoriete bestemming van de Belgen (40%) – vooral bij de Franstaligen (47%) – en kent nu zelfs 12% meer aantrekkingskracht dan in 2009, ten nadele van Turkije en België. Spanje (14%) en Italië (13%) maken het trio koplopers compleet. Wat vervoer betreft, vertrekt 65% van de Belgen met de auto, 32% met het vliegtuig, 5% met de autobus en 4% met de trein. De zee blijft een topbestemming, maar de Belgen diversifiëren hun vakantie meer De zee blijft de favoriete bestemming van de Europeanen (62%), ver voor rondreizen (20%), de bergen (19%) en de stad (14%). De Italianen trekken er in groten getale naartoe (73%). De Britten zijn het meest te vinden voor een rondreis (29%). Ook al staat de zee nog steeds hoog aangeschreven bij meer dan de helft van de Belgen (53%), toch verblijven zij er minder dan het Europese gemiddelde. De vakantietypes van onze landgenoten zijn gevarieerder: 23% van hen gaat op rondreis om nieuwe horizonten te verkennen – vooral de Nederlandstalige reizigers (27% vs 18% voor de Franstaligen) – terwijl 21% naar het platteland trekt, 20% kiest voor de bergen (-7% in vergelijking met 2009) en 15% voor de stad. Rust, prioriteit nr. 1 van de Europeaan en de Belg Wat is een ideale vakantie? Zoals gewoonlijk gaan de meeste Europeanen vooral met vakantie om uit te rusten: voor 60% is rust primordiaal3. Eén Europeaan op vier (25%) vertrekt overigens vooral op vakantie om uit te rusten. Algemeen gezien willen de Europeanen ook meer tijd met hun gezin doorbrengen (26%, +3% vs 2009). De zin om nieuwe culturen te ontdekken en andere streken te verkennen (28%) blijft dan weer constant in vergelijking met vorig jaar. Dit jaar lijkt de Belg, in tegenstelling tot 2009, ook vooral de rust te zoeken (28%, +5% vs 2009) en heeft hij minder ontdekkingsdrang dan voorheen (26%, -9% vs 2009). Een vierde van de Belgen (24%) wil zijn vakantie met het gezin of vrienden doorbrengen. Hier duikt danweer het verschil op tussen noord en zuid: de Franstaligen kiezen eerder voor ontdekking (30% vs 22%) terwijl de Nederlandstaligen er de voorkeur aan geven om tijd door te brengen met het gezin of vrienden (25% vs 23%). Hoe dan ook, iedereen wil van de vakantie gebruik maken om uit te rusten.

Een relatief stabiel vakantiebudget in Europa, maar gestegen in België! Het vakantiebudget van de Europeanen lijkt te stabiliseren in vergelijking met 2009 en stijgt zelfs met 17% naar een gemiddelde van 2083€. Achter deze stagnering gaan echter contrasterende situaties schuil: het budget stijgt aanzienlijk in het Verenigd Koninkrijk (2372€, +142€), in Frankrijk (1945€, +123€) en in Spanje (1879€, +220€), maar daalt in Oostenrijk (2278€, -55€), in Italië (2132€, -72€) en in het bijzonder in Duitsland (1956€, -194€). Duitsland vervoegt zo Frankrijk en Spanje onder de limiet van 2000€. Dit gezegd zijnde verklaarde bijna twee derden van de Europeanen dat de crisis een invloed zal hebben op hun vakantiebudget. Ze zullen besparen op vrije tijd en uitstappen (68%), evenals op kledij (66%) tijdens hun verblijf. Minder dan de helft van de Europeanen zal echter zijn uitgaven voor vervoer en auto, accommodatie en voeding verlagen. De Europeanen willen dus vooral hun welzijn tijdens de vakantie behouden. Het vakantiebudget van de Belgen ondervindt dit jaar duidelijk weinig invloed van de crisis. Het stijgt met 97€ (+4% vs 2009) en bedraagt 2325€. Zo staat het op de tweede plaats op Europees niveau, na het Verenigd Koninkrijk. De Franstaligen zien hun budget stijgen met 3% (2241€), de Nederlandstaligen met 4% (2375€). Het klimaat als beslissende keuzefactor, maar gezondheid blijft de voornaamste bekommernis van Belgische en Europese vakantiegangers Het budget was de voorbije jaren het voornaamste keuzecriterium voor de meeste Europeanen, maar het verliest dit jaar zijn invloed (39%) en wordt ingehaald door het klimaat (41%). De risico’s op aanslagen blijven op de derde plaats staan (37%). De Belgen hechten het minste belang aan het budget (28%), ondanks de crisis. Bij ons is het klimaat verreweg de voornaamste keuzefactor (44% waarvan 48% voor de Nederlandstaligen en 40% voor de Franstaligen)! Deze wordt gevolgd door de toeristische infrastructuur (36%) en de gezondheidsrisico’s (32%). De risico’s op aanslagen (30%) vallen dus buiten het trio van doorslaggevende factoren. Maar wat vrezen de vakantiegangers het meest tijdens hun vakantie? Net zoals de vorige jaren vrezen de Europeanen voor gezondheidsproblemen tijdens hun verblijf, zowel voor wie ter plaatse is (49%) als bij de thuisblijvers (46%). Deze trend zien we ook bij de Belgen (respectievelijk 34% en 31%). Daarna volgt de vrees om een ongeval te hebben (21%), om persoonlijke bezittingen te verliezen (20%) en problemen thuis (20%). In vergelijking met vorig jaar zijn de Belgen meer bezorgd door het idee dat dergelijke problemen zich zouden kunnen voordoen. We merken ook op dat de Franstaligen duidelijk meer angst hebben dan de Nederlandstaligen. Al deze types incidenten maken deel uit van de dagelijkse interventies van Europ Assistance.

Belgen kampioen in het vooraf organiseren van hun reis in 2010! Wat de organisatie van de reis betreft, plannen de Europeanen meestal (71%) hun reis lange tijd op voorhand, zelfs in tijden van crisis. Minder dan een derde van de ondervraagde personen (28%) verklaart dan weer dat ze last minute beslissen. Traditioneel zijn de Italianen meesters in de laattijdige organisatie (38%) gevolgd door de Fransen (32%). Grote primeur voor de Belgen dit jaar: ze steken de Duitsers en Oostenrijkers voorbij in de starting blocks en worden kampioenen in het vooraf reserveren (85%, +11% vs 2009)! De economische crisis heeft 41% van de Belgen ertoe aangezet om hun reservatiegedrag te wijzigen: de helft van hen (21%) geeft er de voorkeur aan om zich vroeger voor te bereiden, de andere (20%) verkiest te wachten tot het laatste moment. Deze evolutie benadrukt eens te meer het belang om tijdig een annulatieverzekering aan te gaan. 62% van de Europeanen en 57% van de Belgen boeken hun reis via het internet, dat meer dan ooit het belangrijkste reservatiekanaal wordt 62% van de Europeanen kiest Internet als reservatiemiddel voor hun vakantie (+12% vs 2009). De Britten zijn de grootste fans van het elektronisch boeken (68%) en maken zo het verschil met het gemiddelde groter. 57% van de Belgen boekt momenteel zijn reis via het web, een stijging van 11% in vergelijking met 2009! Een ander verrassend feit in het aankoopgedrag van de Belgen: in vergelijking met 2009 stappen ze minder zelf bij een touroperator of reisbureau binnen (24%, -9% vs 2009) en geven ze er de voorkeur aan om direct online te boeken via de websites van luchtvaartmaatschappijen of hotels (32%, +10%). Deze laatste tendens doet zich vooral voor in het noorden van het land (21% vs 12% voor de Franstaligen). Wat de aankoop van all-informules betreft, kiezen de Belgen het vaakst voor dit type reis (29%), na de Britten (33%) en de Oostenrijkers (32%). Net zoals de andere Europeanen stelt 71% van de Belgen zijn reis wel à la carte samen, een mooie vooruitgang in vergelijking met vorig jaar (+7%). De all-inreizen verliezen 5%. Internet wint de gouden palm voor de toeristische revolutie van het voorbije decennium! Ter gelegenheid van deze tiende editie van de Barometer benadrukte 59% van de Europeanen de enorme invloed van de technologie op de toeristische sector door de opkomst van het Internet uit te roepen tot DE toeristische revolutie van het voorbije decennium. Deze revolutie leidt tot de mogelijkheid om thuis rustig zelf je vakantie te kunnen kiezen en boeken. Zelf organiseren en de vakantie “beheren” wordt zo een belangrijke revolutie in Europa. De tweede revolutie heeft betrekking op de opkomst van de low cost-maatschappijen (35%) gevolgd door de ontwikkeling van de all in-formules (27%), de weekendvakanties en korte trips (25%) en de ontwikkeling van last minute boekingen (24%). Tenslotte is er ook nog de opkomst van de cadeaubons (6%).

Meer dan de helft van de Belgen (52%) beschouwt de opkomst van het web als de meest markante evolutie in de geschiedenis van het toerisme tijdens de 10 voorbije jaren. Dit fenomeen wordt overigens als eerste vermeld door 37% van de Nederlandstalige respondenten en 33% van de Franstalige respondenten. Het belang om gedekt te zijn door een volledige bijstand met inbegrip van kwalitatief hoogstaande medische verzorging Gezien de talrijke vertrekken die voor de zomer verwacht worden en met het oog op de sterke verspreiding van de Belgische vakantiegangers (in het buitenland en soms in sterk geïsoleerde regio’s) herinnert Europ Assistance aan het belang om een bijstands- en annulatieverzekering te hebben die voldoende dekking biedt. 78% van de Belgen verklaart gedekt te zijn door een bijstandscontract (jaarlijks of tijdelijk) en 58% heeft een annulatieverzekering. De bijstandsmaatschappij blijft bovendien, als antwoord op de vrees voor gezondheidsproblemen, knowhow en doorgedreven medische expertise ter beschikking stellen van de klanten. De specifieke eigenheid van de bijstand vergt een eigen medische benadering. De rol van de arts van Europ Assistance is hierbij van groot belang. Dankzij ervaring als spoedarts, in transport- en telegeneeskunde en een grondige kennis van de verschillende medische culturen wereldwijd zorgt de arts van Europ Assistance ervoor dat de kwaliteit van de zorgen verstrekt aan de patiënt zo veel mogelijk overeenstemt met wat in België gangbaar is. Het is ook zijn taak om in te spelen op de noden van de patiënt, deze gerust te stellen en zo goed mogelijk aan zijn wens om zo snel mogelijk naar huis te gaan tegemoet te komen. Tenslotte kan hij zijn gezag doen gelden bij het nemen van medische beslissingen. Natuurrampen zijn voortaan gedekt Het nieuws van de voorbije maanden heeft de vrees van de reizigers om geconfronteerd te worden met een natuurramp en vast te zitten op hun vakantiebestemming nog aangewakkerd. Recente voorbeelden zijn de gevolgen van de vulkaanuitbarsting in IJsland en de overstromingen in de Var. In deze omstandigheden is de tussenkomst van luchtvaartmaatschappijen gereglementeerd en beperkt. Natuurrampen zijn voortaan een uitbreiding van het jaarlijkse en het tijdelijke bijstandscontract van Europ Assistance. Deze staat nu in voor de kosten van de verlenging van het verblijf in een hotel wanneer de verzekerden die zich in het buitenland bevinden hun terugreis niet kunnen aanvangen op de voorziene datum ten gevolge van overmacht door een natuurramp (overstromingen, tsunami, aardbeving, vulkaanuitbarsting, enz.) of atmosferische omstandigheden. Europ Assistance komt tussen in de meest dringene kosten (verblijf, ontbijt, transport naar luchthaven of station) met een maximum van 200 euro per dag en een maximum van 1.000 euro. De prijs van de uitbreiding van het contract varieert tussen 4 en 12 euro per persoon per jaar.

Tijdens de zomer van 2009 ontving Europ Assistance 55.580 oproepen en hielp de organisatie 22.648 gezinnen Elk jaar krijgt Europ Assistance België meer dan 300.000 oproepen en worden er 125.000 interventies gedaan, gaande van eenvoudig advies tot de repatriëring met een vliegtuig (medische jet). De periode van de zomervakantie is traditioneel de drukste van het jaar. Tijdens de maanden juli en augustus 2009 ontving Europ Assistance België 55.580 oproepen en stond de organisatie 22.638 gezinnen bij. Om deze zomer nog beter te kunnen inspelen op de verwachte stroom van oproepen zullen 140 personen 24u/24 ter beschikking staan om de ongelukkige reizigers oplossingen op maat te kunnen aanbieden van de bovenste plank. Op logistiek vlak worden de nodige middelen voorzien, zoals bijvoorbeeld de reservatie van vervangwagens van het type “monovolume” in landen die het meest door gezinnen worden aangedaan.

De Europese reisbarometer Deze referentie-enquête werd door Ipsos gevoerd bij een steekproef van 3.500 personen die in Europa wonen (Fransen, Duitsers, Britten, Italianen, Spanjaarden, Belgen en Oostenrijkers). Tussen 8 maart en 20 april 2010 werden de mensen thuis opgebeld. De steekproef werd samengesteld volgens de methode van de quota (geslacht, leeftijd, beroep gezinshoofd, na stratificatie per regio en per grootte van de agglomeratie). In elk deelnemend land werden 500 interviews afgenomen. De Europese vakantiebarometer heeft tot doel om jaarlijks de reisintenties te meten bij de inwoners van de betrokken landen, evenals hun redenen om met vakantie te gaan, hun favoriete bestemmingen en verblijfsformules... Aan de hand van de tendensen die daaruit naar voren komen, kunnen de 80 ondernemingen van de Europ Assistance Groep beter inspelen op de marktontwikkelingen. De tendensen zijn ook waardevol om de talrijke interventieaanvragen die deze zomer worden verwacht voor te bereiden.
