Van een psalm komt een psalm door Sytze de Vries bij de presentatie van Karel Eykman’s ‘Een knipoog van U zou al helpen’, 7/9/2013
De eerste ‘psalm-ervaring’ die ik mij herinner, had ik als klein kind, op schoot bij mijn grootmoeder, mijn Friese beppe1: BEPPE Zij rept zich breed de gangen door en vult de deur met warmte. Ik heb geen weet van haar geschiedenis, van alle tranen waar haar leven in verdronken is. Voor mij is zij het grote nu, het stille tij, een en al schoot. Haar ogen vullen mij tot op het bot. Haat stem zingt mij de psalmen voor: ‘het ruime hemelrond’ ervaar ik deinend op haar borst. En nooit gestorven is die porseleinen stem vol craquelé, oneindig licht en hemels. Zij laat zich in mij horen, want uit haar ben ik geboren.
En vervolgens wordt, zoals voor velen ook voor mij, de maandagmorgen op de lagere school gekleurd door het wekelijkse ‘psalmversje’. Wie al zo vroeg vertrouwd raakt met de psalmen, is een gezegend mens! Die komt namelijk spelenderwijs in aanraking met het fenomeen dat poëzie heet, die gaat de wereld binnen van beeldtaal en metaforen, van rijm en ritme. En dat is een rijkdom. Ook al wordt die niet altijd op zijn waarde geschat…. Want:

Psalmen zijn gedichten, gebeden, en gezangen ineen. a. Psalmen zijn gedichten Allereerst al in hun structuur: de vormen zijn vast, in welgetelde syllaben, in ritmen en klankrijm. (Al moet je ze daartoe wel in het oorspronkelijke Hebreeuws horen) Herkenbaar voor ons blijven ze vooral aan dat parallellisme, een soort ‘gedachtenrijm’, waarin eenzelfde idee met andere woorden wordt herhaald: zoals: De aarde is van de ENE met wat haar vult, de wereld met wie daarop wonen,
Psalmen zijn gedichten want er wordt beeld na beeld opgeroepen, de woorden worden zichtbaar gemaakt, tot plaatjes ‘omgezongen’. Psalmen staan vol metaforen, staan bol van beeldtaal. Een meta-foor is, wat het woord zegt: een over-drager. Psalmen brengen je van de ene wereld naar een andere, waar rivieren in de handen klappen en bergen het uitjubelen, Een gedicht roept een andere werkelijkheid op, is een uitbraak uit de rationaliteit. Als hoorder en lezer van een gedicht ga je leven in de beelden, en die kunnen haaks staan op de zogenaamde ‘realiteit’. Alleen dat al maakt van de hele Schrift één groot poëzie-album. Al die beelden, je ademt ze in, je drinkt ze uit, je snuift ze op, want ze zijn niet zelden zintuiglijk ! Dat heeft dan een heilzame werking, is een geneesmiddel, liefst driemaal daags in te nemen, of op zijn minst een bezweringsformule, een bezweren van de dreigingen in die ervaarbare werkelijkheid, een zingen tégen het donker.
b. Psalmen zijn gebeden want ze zwaaien met wierook, ze bonzen op de hemeldeur, ze gaan diep door het stof én janken omhoog vanuit datzelfde stof, in een schreeuw om recht, met verwensingen, ze zingen onderweg hun tijd vooruit, ze juichen als gekken, verstommen van verbijstering, ze blozen van verwachting en schreien van teleurstelling. Maar bijna altijd cirkelen ze rond de Aan-of afwezigheid van de Ene Naam. Doorgaans is Die in de Psalmen het adres, de Aangesprokene, of op zijn minst de Be-sprokene, het object. Om dit alles is het Psalter het vaste gebedenboek van de synagoge, en werd het dat ook van de kerk. Liederen blijven ‘strooigoed’. Psalmen zijn vaste kost.
c. Psalmen zijn gezangen want in de overgeleverde regieaanwijzingen wordt duidelijk dat vaak stem en instrument nodig zijn om deze gebeden op toonhoogte te houden, maar meer nog, om ze tot bindmiddel van samenzang te maken. Een gesproken gedicht kan maar klinken uit één mond, maar een door velen gezongen gedicht kan klinken als uit één mond. Dat tilt het uit boven individualiteit. Het ‘ik’ van de Psalmen vermenigvuldigt zich – zegt Miskotte - tot een gezamenlijk ‘ook ik’.
Van een psalm komt een psalm Ze roepen op tot scheuren, breken en delen, tot bewerken en hertalen, tot een ‘loflied voor tegenstem’. Dat is binnen de oevers van de Schrift zelf al zo: de zogenaamde ‘Psalm van Jona’, dat lied ‘in het holst van de vis’, is - zoals Karel Deurloo het ooit betitelde – een ‘psalmslaatje’: het
3 bestaat bijna volledig uit citaten van de ons bekende Psalmen. En wanneer in het Nieuwe Testament het Oude wordt geciteerd, is een kwart van die citaten afkomstig uit het boek van de Psalmen. Biddende, poëtische zangen zijn het , die vragen om ‘toe-eigening’, en om actualisering. Die oproepen tot steeds nieuwe zelfwerkzaamheid. ‘Dichters herkennen de taal van dichters’ schrijft Niek Schuman in zijn studie over de Psalmen ‘Drama van crisis en hoop’.
Met David is het begonnen, die zo mooi zingen kon. David is dood, dichters gaan onder en op als een zon. Hij heeft zo van het leven gehouden, gespeeld en gedanst en gekust, hij heeft zo aan het elven geleden, nu is hij in diepe rust. Maar overal op de bergen rondom Jeruzalem overal op de aarde hoort men zijn heerlijke stem. Overal op de orgels legt hij zijn hand aan de harp, met zijn hemel zo in zijn schik. En overal heeft hij zijn volgers, Vondel. Revius, Scharp, Wim Barnard, Jan Wit en ik. schrijft J.W. Schulte Nordholt, in de bundel Het Landvolk, waarin de dichtersgroep van de Pietersberg, die in de zestiger jaren tekende voor de nieuwe Psalmberijming, hun gedichten samen bundelden. Ik bied u aan: een kleine boeketje, lukraak bloemgelezen, van gedichten, die op enigerlei wijze iets ‘hebben’ met het verschijnsel psalm. Ik formuleer het zo breed en zo voorzichtig mogelijk. Want er is nogal wat afstand tussen het hertalen van een psalm, of het parafraseren van delen ervan, of het gebruik van een psalm als springplank voor een eigen, andere taal, of – heel simpel – je eigen gedicht een psalm noemen. Van dat alles een enkel voorbeeld.
J.B.Charles (1910-1983) De eerste maal dat ik zelf dat hergebruik van het begrip ‘psalm’ tegenkwam, was al in mijn middelbare schooltijd. Het was ‘Een kleine Psalm’ van J.B.Charles (pseudoniem van de rechtsgeleerde Nagel): Hij alleen zou met een grote sigaar in de mond op straat mogen lopen, met de duimen in zijn vest, want Hij is God. Maar Hij doet het niet want Hij is God.
4 Ik herinner me de opwinding die dit gedicht toen bij mij – en niet alleen bij mij - veroorzaakte: zo spreken over God, dat is durven! En er waren ook mensen die dit ‘ontheiliging van de Naam’ vonden. Maar nu lijkt dat meer op de opwinding die ontstond, toen ooit in de Barend Servet-show Hare Majesteit al spruitjes schillend werd getoond. Schande werd er van gesproken. Maar inmiddels weten we dat deze God, die zelf de taal benutte om te scheppen, ongetwijfeld moet glimlachen om deze prachtige paradox: Hij, de God van deze wereld omgekeerd. Maar ook het beeld zelf van die zelfvoldane directeur, als gestalte uit de tijd van de naoorlogse wederopbouw, is inmiddels al lang ter ziele. En de CEO met zijn smartphone en attaché-koffertje lijkt me geen goede actualisering van dit godsbeeld. En natuurlijk is daar ook Nijhofs overbekende ‘ ‘Ik ging naar Bommel om de brug te zien’, mogelijk wel de moeder aller psalmverwijzingen. Ik citeer alleen de laatste twee regels: ..en wat zij zong dacht ik dat psalmen waren. Prijst God, zijn hand zal u bewaren. Ik veronderstel het gedicht bij u bekend. Daar is de zingende moeder ( net als mijn beppe) de roergangster van de traditie, die het verleden verbindt met de toekomst, déze wereld met de ‘oneindigheid’. De psalm als ‘brug’ : ik verwijs daarvoor opnieuw naar Schumans psalmenboek. Deze laatste regels vormen voor mij ook een treffende samenvatting van de hartslag van de Bijbelse psalmen: De lofzang (Prijst God), het hooghouden van de Naam, ook als tegengeluid, juist ook de profundis, en het vertrouwen ( zijn hand zal u bewaren), nogal eens ondanks alles. Toe-eigening Ik liet het al vallen: een fraai woord uit het klassiek binnenkerkelijke jargon is: toe-eigening. Zo ‘inheems’, dat de spellingcontrole er moeilijk over deed. Er wordt allereerst mee bedoeld, dat je de heilsgeheimen persoonlijk ‘eigen’ maakt; je trekt je de boodschap persoonlijk aan, het wordt je ‘pakkie-an’. Specifiek wordt dat, als daarbij dichters aan het roer staan! Van een psalm komt een psalm…. ‘Dichters herkennen de taal van dichters….’ En uiteraard kan in het lijstje namen dan niet ontbreken de naam van
Huub Oosterhuis Bij degenen die vandaag de dag de originele psalmteksten maatgevend laat zijn voor nieuwe poëtische teksten, moet uiteraard die naam genoemd worden. Oosterhuis zegt over zichzelf graag, dat al zijn teksten ontstaan ‘in de schaduw van de psalmen’. Als woorden die naar gerechtigheid zoeken, haar bezingen, of stem geven aan wie haar ontberen, an wie zij ontzegd wordt. Psalmen ook als woorden die de rechtvaardige mens profileren. Recent voltooide hij zijn ‘150 psalmen vrij’.Een in de 60er jaren begonnen collectief project, dat gaandeweg na ruim 50 jaar solistisch voltooid is. Soms zijn de grondteksten van nabij gevolgd, soms worden ze vrij geparafraseerd, soms roepen ze ook andere teksten op en soms ook gaat de dichter in discussie met de oertekst. Per psalm is een andere beslissing genomen, waarbij de keuzeredenen zich laten raden. Ik ben voor vanmiddag even uiterst selectief te werk gegaan en heb, vooral ook ut eigen nieuwsgierigheid, de vinger gelegd bij een aantal overbekende, heikele en hachelijke passages. Oosterhuis reageert daar namelijk drie maal heel verschillend op. Psalm 139 Allereerst de beruchte passage aan het eind van psalm 139. Een psalm, die nogal eens wordt verstaan als één groot loflied op een veilige goddelijke omarming: Ik ben gekend, doorgrond,
5 in de moederschoot kende U me al… De tekst lijkt mij echter eerder op het scherpst van de snee te roepen, a la Jeremia’s ‘U bent me te sterk geweest, U hebt me overweldigd’. Zo benadrukt deze psalm het m.i. ook: ik kan U niet ontlopen, al zou ik willen! U hebt me door! U bent onontkoombaar… Het is als een worstelpartij, waarbij de dichter zich gewonnen geeft. Maar dan ook helemaal! En dan ontstaat een loyaliteit, van waaruit de partij kiezende verontwaardiging explodeert: ( in mijn eigen bewerking) Wie jou verraden, kwaad van je spreken, laat ze toch vallen! Ik verafschuw ze, zoals ze jou doen. Ze zijn ook mijn tegenstanders.2 In de rooms-katholieke liturgie worden juist deze verzen doorgaans overgeslagen, of op zijn minst tussen grote haken gezet. Oosterhuis geeft twee versies van deze psalm: een vertaling én een vrij tekst, die als een ‘mediterend gedicht’ klinkt. In beide versies slaat ook hij, als een kind van Rome, juiste deze beruchte passage over. Psalm 137 Bladeren we twee psalmen terug: Psalm 137, het lied van de ballingen in het land van vuur en oven, die het verrekken hun ‘Sion-liedjes’ voor kun kampbeulen te zingen. Dit lied vol melancholie, vol heimwee naar Jeruzalem, eindigt echter letterlijk verpletterend, met een verwensing over Babel, die hoer: Dochter van Babel, verwoestende furie, Zalig, wie vergelden aan jou je wandaad, door jou begaan aan ons! Zalig, wie grijpt en verplettert jouw zuigelingen tegen de steenrots!3 Ooit vroeg ik Ad den Besten, toch een Schriftgetrouw vertaler, voor het radioprogramma ‘Lied van de Week, om een bewerking van deze psalm op de fraaie melodie An Wasserflüssen Babylons’. Hij weigerde. Ik bezit nog zijn schrijven, waarin hij meedeelt: dat doe ik echt niet, dat krijg ik niet uit mijn strot. (Jan Wat had indertijd getekend voor de nieuwe psalmberijming. ) Indertijd heb ik toen zelf een vertaling/bewerking gemaakt, om tenminste toch deze bijzonder melodie weer te verbinden met de tekst, waarop die ooit ontstond. Maar ook daar zijn diverse tekstvarianten getuige van mijn eigen worsteling tussen schriftgetrouwheid en aanvaardbaarheid. Het werd tenslotte ( ook een omschrijving): Breek Babels trotse hoogmoed stuk. Vernietig het, om ons geluk; Gij kunt haat stralen doven. Niet langer zal zij voortbestaan! Gezegend wie haar durft weerstaan en U alleen wil loven.4 In een eerdere versie in Zingend Geloven , deel 5, luidt de laatste regel nog haar goed en bloed zal roven. Een directere verwijzing nog, met ook een knipoog naar Luthers Vaste burcht.

6 Opvallend is, dat Oosterhuis er hier ditmaal niet omheen draait! Vrouwe Babel, furieuze, gezegeld die jou zal vergelden. Niets blijft er over van jou. En als ze je kinderen grijpen en te pletter slaan tegen de rotsen, wat zal je huilen.5 Waarbij de ingevoegde zin Niets blijft er over van jou de duiding van dit beeld wil zijn. Wordt het daar soms acceptabeler van? Psalm 21 Maar het meest intrigerend is toch wel het derde voorbeeld: uit Psalm 21. Daar wordt eerst de tekst redelijk ‘getrouwelijk’ gevolgd: Hij zal jouw vijanden vinden en weg van de aardbodem vagen. Hij laat voor hen vuurovens bouwen, ze vastbinden rug aan rug – en dan de zweep erover. Hun kinderen zal Hij verdelgen, uitroeien de vrucht van hun zaad. Opnieuw een passage, waarin de vijanden van de rechtvaardigen, de boosaardigen - ‘ploert en schender’ in Oosterhuis’ termen – elke toekomst wordt ontzegd. Dat onrecht mag en zal zich niet voortplanten! Maar vervolgens voet Oosterhuis er een anti-psalm aan toe. (Deze psalm heeft ook, bij uitzondering, een titel: Zang en tegenzang.) En die tegenzang luidt: Ik lees en herlees dit lied. Was dit de god onzer vaderen? Mijn god is het niet meer. Luister, mijn zoon en mijn dochter ( en je ziet meteen Tjeerd en Trijntje voor je) zing dit liedje niet verder, leer het je kinderen niet. Als er een god is? Als er een god is is het een ander. Een die niet komt verdelgen die geen vuurovens stookt maar zijn geliefden levend uit de vlammen bevrijdt. Niet van de machtigen is Hij de god maar van hun slaven en prooien. 5

Tot mijn grote geluk heb ik Hem leren kennen. Hij legde zijn hand op mijn hoofd. Ik ga met Hem al een leven. Hij weet hoe verder, ik niet. Luister mijn kinderen allen: Hem stel ik jullie voor – een kennismaking aan een eenvoudige tafel. Zing iets voor Hem, Hij houdt van zacht a capella maar ook van uitbundig met slagwerk. Je hebt je tafel gedekt. Waar blijft Hij, vraag je, Hij zou toch komen? Ja, Hij zou komen, begin maar te zingen. En komt Hij niet, je zult nooit weten waarom niet. Troost je, Hij hoort je van verre. Hij is van ver en dichtbij. Opvallen is, hoe het woord god consequent met een kleine letter wordt geschreven, maar Hij en Hem even consequent met een groot-kapitaal. Oosterhuis laat de psalm wel staan in zijn oorspronkelijke felle kleur, maar herschrijft in zijn ‘tegenzang’ met de kleuren die hij verder aantreft op het brede palet van de Schriften. Kun je op een dergelijke manier het spreken over God corrigeren? Aanpassen aan een andere tijd, een andere theologie? Het leuke is, dat zoiets in de Schrift ook gebeurt: zo schrijft het Samuelboek (2 Samuel 24:1) over David, hoe God hem aanzette om het volk te tellen, en hem vervolgens te straffen voor deze hoogmoedige ijdeltuiterij. De schrijvers van het Kroniekenboek ( 2 Kron. 21:1) herhalen deze vertelling bijna letterlijk, maar hebben overduidelijk moeite gehad met de actie van God, en schrijven die vervolgens toe aan de duivel: en Satan zette David aan om het volk te tellen…. Zo, dan snapt een mens met rechtvaardigheidsgevoel tenminste, hoe de vork in de steel zat….
Drie maal (naar) Psalm 22 Nu verder met het namenlijstje van dichters: Ik koos voor een ‘vergelijkend warenonderzoek’ voor psalm 22. Want die heeft in de christelijke traditie al een heel specifieke interpretatiegeschiedenis: hij wordt in feite alleen maar gelezen/gezongen op de Goede Vrijdag, met dank aan de evangelist Mattheus die deze psalm in zijn lijdensverhaal rijkelijk citeert. Het heet dan, in die christelijke traditie, dat deze psalm zo geheel en al is ‘toegesneden’ op Jezus. Deze psalm voorziet en voorzegt
8 hem. Maar deze psalm had natuurlijk al een zelfstandig eigen bestaan. en je kunt eerder en beter zegen dat leven en sterven van Jezus op deze psalm is toegesneden; het past er helemaal in. Deze Psalm zit hem als gegoten; hij vult hem, vervult hem. Kort een kenschets van deze psalm: Een mens schreeuwt naar een hemel, die ‘doof en stom’ is. Hij kent dat adres uit zijn jeugd. Hij kent het oude verhaal van uittocht en bevrijding. Hij heeft het nieuw gezang daarover gehoord. Waarom geldt dat nu niet meer voor mij? Bedreigd is hij, in een hoek getrapt, op alle mogelijke manieren uitgekleed. Toch houdt hij niet op, de ENE aan diens reputatie te houden. En hij weet zeker, dat de dag zal komen dat ook hij de lofzang weer aan zingen in de kring van hen die hun vertrouwen in deze reputatie niet opgaven. En de hele wereld mag en moet het dan horen.
a. Ernesto Cardenal De zestiger jaren van de vorige eeuw staan nu bekend als de tijden van rebellie, verandering, geloof in de maakbaarheid van de samenleving. Pogingen om in Zuid Amerika onder het juk uit te komen van alleen-heersende generaals en dictators, die weinig machtsmiddelen schuwden, konden zich ook in onze Lange Landen op de nodige sympathie verheugen. Ernesto Cardenal is in 1925 geboren in Nicaragua. Hij ging de illegaliteit in, het ondergronds verzet tegen het dictatorsregime van Somoza, en werd daardoor meermalen gearresteerd. Later koos hij voor het kloosterleven, en werd vanuit die positie steunpunt voor de kleine boeren. Tussen de bedrijven door schreef hij zijn versie van moderne Zuid-Amerikaanse psalmen, in het Nederlands verschenen onder de titel: ‘Protest achter prikkeldraad’. Cardenal heeft deze psalm 22 gevat in het kader van zijn eigen, roerige, tijd. De ‘ík-figuur’ is nu de politiek ‘kalt gestellte’ mens, de het regime onwelgevallige proteststem, voorwerp van leugenpropaganda, opgesloten in een interneringskamp, in een psychiatrische inrichting. Een tekst, niet geheel van autobiografische invulling ontbloot. De tekst spreekt geheel voor zichzelf, het is ‘de schreeuw van Munch’ in woorden: Mijn God, mijn God, waarom hebt Gij mij verlaten? een karikatuur ben ik geen mens mikpunt van spot in alle kranten wordt om mij gelachen Tanks rondom mitrailleurs die naar mij wijzen en overal prikkeldraad prikkeldraad onder stroom Ik ben een naam in hun papieren Ik kreeg een nummer in mijn huid gefotografeerd achter prikkeldraad als op een röntgenfoto zijn al mijn beenderen te tellen ik ben niemand meer naakt word ik naar de gaskamer gedreven ze verdelen mijn kleren en mijn schoenen ik schreeuw om morfine niemand hoort me Ik schreeuw in mijn dwangbuis ik schreeuw heel de nacht in het asiel voor gestoorden de zaal voor ongeneeslijk zieken het paviljoen voor besmettelijke zieken
9 het gesticht voor de ouden van dagen ik vecht met de dood in de psychiatrische kliniek ik stik onder de zuurstofkap ik schrei op het politiebureau in de rechtszaal in de folterkamer het weeshuis ik ben radioactief besmet iedereen is bang en ontwijkt me Maar eens zal ik mijn broeders over U verhalen ik zal U prijzen op onze bijeenkomst mijn liederen klinken op uit een groot volk de armen gaan aan tafel ons volk viert feest het nieuwe volk dat wordt geboren6 Cardenal actualiseert deze eeuwenoude klacht van een terzijde geschoven en inde goot vertrapte mens. En met hem/haar ook van alle paria’s van zo’n maatschappij. Hij raamt de oude woorden in in de eigen tijd, maar ook in de eigen ervaringen. Ook voor hem is het slot van de originele psalm van belang: In een vernieuwde en bevrijde samenleving, waar de armen samen het feestmaal vieren, zal hij vooropgaan in de lofzang.
Lloyd Haft Heel anders is de bewerking van Lloyd Haft. De flaptekst van zijn bundel ‘De Psalmen’ zegt het zelf, dat hij zich een grote vrijheid heeft veroorloofd om “een kans te geven aan een hedendaagse, sterk persoonlijke religiositeit’. Haft heeft de psalmen alle 150 ‘bewerkt’- Dat klinkt bijna of hij er met een mes in gekerfd heeft, en soms is dat ook zo. Naar Psalm 22 Wilt u mij niet zien? Hoort u mij maar wendt u zich af? Kon ik beter stil zijn als u? zoals ook al mijn vaderen nu stil zijn, die u riepen? Had u hun roepen nodig om hen voor te zijn? Hun loven als een troon om op te zwijgen. Toch denk ik aan uw naam: ik been geen worm maar mens. Niet stieren, niet buffels, niet brullende leeuwen tegenover mij maar u! \Dieper dan hun muilen, scherper dan al hun horens is uw stilte, die mijn beenderen doorboort. 6

Hier is de psalm gereduceerd tot een verwijt van een ‘ik’ in de richting van een iemand anders, een ‘u’ zonder hoofdletters. Die ander is een tegenover dat in alle talen zwijgt. Maar: Toch denk ik aan uw naam…. Die oudtestamentische manier van zeggen geeft aan laat genoegzaam raden wie met die ‘u’ bedoeld wordt. Het herinnert aan het ‘nochtans’ uit de Statenvertaling. De aanhef van het origineel ( Waarom hebt u mij verlaten?) is hier tot hoofdmotto geworden. De psalm druipt van de ironie, zo niet van een zeker cynisme: de oorspronkelijke schreeuw uit de goot is nu een verwijt geworden: ik ben geen worm, maar mens. Maar een mens die vooralsnog geen genoegen neemt met een gesloten hemel, een afwezige god. Beelden uit de oorspronkelijke psalm 22 worden op hun kop gezet: niks stieren en leeuwen, u bent het, die mij aanvalt en verwondt met uw stilzwijgen. Dat is pas echt dodelijk…. ‘sterk persoonlijk en religieus’ De maatschappelijke context, bij Cardenal zo allesbeheersend, is hier volledig afwezig. Het gaat inderdaad alleen nog om ‘Ik en Gij.’ Waar het origineel de horizon kent van achter zich ‘het voorgeslacht, wiens lofzang God in een troonzetel zet, en voor zich het visioen van ‘het zingende volk, waarmee ook de ik de lofzang opnieuw zal aanheffen’, ontbreekt dat uitzicht hier volledig. The rest is silence….. Maar de typering ‘hedendaags’ betekent ook de individualisering, betekent – aan het einde van de vorige eeuw – een tijd van persoonlijke ‘spiritualiteit’, van god-zoekende mystiek. Een andere, een Nieuwe Tijd….. Na de schipbreuk van het engagement: het Koninkrijk is toch niet zo naast de deur….. En godsdienst kan beter achter de deur….
Anton Endt Waar Hafft de psalm in een negatief zet, doet Anton Ent het omgekeerde: hij belicht, ja over-belicht het ‘happy’ end van de psalm. Al die dreunende ellende, het was als een boze droom, die in de morgen moet wijken. LEED Tenslotte kraait de haan. Het morgenlicht springt als een hinde uit het struikgewas. Ik laat het dal van de nacht achter mij en zie de dag als een vlakte voor mij. Ik voel, nu de warmte zich nestelt, hoe koud de duisternis was. Verzet wekte zij, ik werd door angsten gepest, begluurd en bespot, ik dreef van het zweet. Licht is overgave, wijst mij de weg naar de rivier waar ik languit mij neerleggen kan tot ik gereinigd ben. Lijden wordt leed dat tot in lengte van dagen gedeeld wordt.
11 Ent publiceerde zijn ‘psalmreflecties’ ( zoals hij ze zelf noemt) rond de eeuwwisseling in het magazine HN ( Voorheen Hervormd Nederland), het latere Volzin. Een jaar later als uitgave gebundeld onder de naam Entiteiten. Het gedicht beschrijft de opluchten van het ontwaken. De nieuwe dag is een opluchting, en een oplichting. Een nieuwe vrijheid strekt zich uit. De nieuwe morgen maakt eerst goed de verschrikkingen van de nacht duidelijk. Het roepen, de schreeuw, zo specifiek in et origineel, en ook bij de vorige bewerkingen, ontbreekt hier totaal. De tekst is een zelfreflectie. En de woeste en bedreigende bende van mensen is ‘verpsychologiseerd’ tot angstdromen. Ben ik zelf al te zeer behept met de aloude kerstening van psalm 22, als ik juist hier het beeld van Christus bij mij wordt opgeroepen biddend, roepend, bedekt met angstzweet, in Gethsemané? En ben ik ook al te vertrouwd met de psalmen dat ik de volgende psalm, de bekende 23, al om de hoek ziek gluren, als Ent schrijft hoe het licht hem meeneemt en laat neerliggen bij de rivier, nog net niet in grazige weiden, maar wel aan ‘waat’ren der rust’? En de zinsnede ‘Tot in lente van dagen’ is immers óók afkomstig uit de laatste regel uit diezelfde psalm 23? Alleen betreft het daar ‘de terugkeer in het huis van de Heer’ , nu is het het lijden, het lijden dat gedeeld wordt tot in lengte van dagen. Gedeeld met wie? Het blijft open…. Maar de dichter draagt deze last niet alleen, zoals in de bange nacht. Misschien wil ik ook wel graag, dat Psalm 23 al oplicht in Psalm 22. Ik heb tenslotte van o.a. Niek Schuman geleerd, dat de in de goot getrapte rechtvaardige, die geen poot meer heeft om op te staan, en die niets méér heeft dan het adres van een God waarmee hij is opgevoed, toch door dat visioen van de zingende gemeenschap weer oevereind komt. En het is dezelfde mens, die vervolgens, onderweg naar die gemeenschap, naar Jeruzalem, koppig alvast zijn lied repeteert: mijn herder is de Ene. Door Hem laat ik mij leiden. En die vijanden die daarbij moeten toekijken, zijn die hufters uit de vorige psalm. Om het drieluik van de Psalmen 22, 23 en 24 af te maken: Psalm 24 opent met de vraag: wie mag er nu eigenlijk binnen gaan in dat heiligdom, wie mag bestijgen de berg van de Heer? Dat is dan die hoofdpersoon uit psalm 22 en psalm 23. De opgestane rechtvaardige, die naar het huis van de Heer terugkeert’. Een mooi voorbeeld, dat er over de volgorde van de psalmen is nagedacht…. Maar of Anton Ent dat ook allemaal wist….
Leo Vroman Intrigerend is ook de serie gedichten van Leo Vroman, van veertien ‘psalmen’7. Bijzonder ook, omdat uit diverse opmerkingen van Vroman duidelijk wordt dat hij weinig op heeft met kerk en christendom. Waarom dan de keuze voor deze titel? Een keuze die vorm én inhoud betreft? Zijn misschien zijn joodse wortels daar debet aan? Of is het ironisch bedoeld? Of is het een persiflage, zoals soms bij anderen? Psalm V Systeem! Is dit een tweegesprek of een met U alleen? Vertel mij dan wie ik ontdek als ik mijn armen tot u strek en om mijn schouders heen. Want soms ben ik uit pure nood Uw jongste of zwakste kind en wil zo vreselijk op Uw schoot 7

12 desnoods de kleine billen bloot bemoederd en bemind, dan weer hoor ik Uw adem zacht suizen tussen mijn slapen alsof ik U pas deze nacht in doodsnood en toch onverwacht uit hoofdpijn heb geschapen. Aanvaard mij daarom als een vriend liefst onervaren, onverdiend, maar wetend hoe ik U mis wanneer uiteindelijk helderziend mijn lichaam, doof en blind gegriend, mag voelen wie U is. Allereerst de vorm: ook Vromans psalmen richten zich- net als de klassieke Psalmen - tot een adres, en kunnen in die zin als een lofprijzing en gebed getypeerd worden, al is het dan ook heel eigensoortig. Al even Intrigerend is vervolgens ook de vraag, waarom de Aangesprokene uitsluitend steeds Systeem genoemd wordt. Ad den Besten heeft in een recensie verwezen naar Spinoza, wiens Godsbeeld opgaat in de onpersoonlijke Natura, de laatste en beslissende kracht achter en in alle levensverschijnselen.8 Vroman was fysioloog, een natuurkundige, iemand die op zoek is naar de bronnen achter de natuurwetten. …maar dat ik nu ook ieder blad van iedere wilde plant wil zoenen en wil aaien, dat doet mij aan U vragen: wat is er hier aan de Hand? Dan is ‘Systeem’ allereerst: wetmatigheid, vaste structuur, en veel van zijn psalmen laten dan ook de natuurwetten flonkeren totdat het je duizelt van de myriaden sterren. Systeem, Gij die de sterrenbeelden in spinrag van ondeelbaar gas over ons hoekheelal verdeelde…. De Aangesprokene moet een naam hebben, die niet belast is met een grote geschiedenis die ‘in zijn naam’ plaats vond. Daartegen zet hij zich meteen af in de eerste Psalm: Systeem! Gij spitst geen oog of baard en draagt geen slepend kleed; hij die in U een man ontwaart misvormt U naar zijn eigen aard waar hij ook niets van weet. De raadsels van het heelal, maar ook het raadsel dat de mens zichzelf is, - beide doen ze de dichter vragen, zoeken, uitdagen. Deze Aangesprokene is blijkbaar toch geen ander, dan waar de originele

13 psalmen van spreken, en tot wie synagoge en kerk bidden – dat blijkt uit het zich afzetten tegen de klassieke godsbeelden. Hij wordt alleen anders benoemd. Systeem, ik nu u dus geen God, geen Heer of ander Woord waarvan men gave en gebod en wraak wacht en tot wiens genot men volkeren vermoordt. Rien van der Berg 9meent, dat de gedachte hem sympathiek is,’ dat Vroman juist uit grote schroom voor de Naam – de jood zo eigen – voor deze aanspreektitel koos. Hij wil niet te klein van Systeem denken. Want Dat/Hij is het die ons denken en begrijpen verre te boven gaat, en dat laat zich aflezen in de kleinste details. Maar de psalm die ik voor vandaag koos, is nu net van een grote intimiteit! Deze ‘kracht’ is wel aanspreekbaar! En wordt daardoor ook ‘persoonlijk’. Is deze Aangesprokene een Tegenover, een vriend misschien, een vader, een moeder, of is het Iets/Iemand in/van mijzelf? Die vraag wordt getypeerd in die twee verschillende armgebaren: strek ik mijn de handen uit, naar iemand anders dus, of is het een zelfomarming? Wie heeft dat niet ooit voor de spiegel geprobeerd: het lijkt of iemand anders zijn armen om je heen geslagen heeft, maar het is een ‘projectie’, het voelt goed maar je blijft alleen…. Is Systeem inderdaad een projectie, een wensbehoefte, de invulling van het verlangen van een klein kind naar veiligheid? (Blijkbaar bewust is hier juist niet voor de vader- maar de moederfiguur gekozen) De mens schept zich een g/God: in doodsnood, uit hoofdpijn. Alsof hj de vrucht is van een te veeleisend denkproces. Maar er is ook een andere associatie: de Griekse mythologie vertelt hoe de oppergod Zeus weer eens een dame verleidde, en vervolgens bezwangerde. Toen at hij, uit bekommernis om de mogelijke gevolgen, de zwangere vrouw in kwestie maar op, maar kreeg daarna zware hoofdpijn. En bij schedellichting baarde hij een kind baarde, - als was het een hersentumor – Minerva/Pallas Athene. Daarom refereert Vroman ongetwijfeld: is dit Systeem ook zo’n mythe, in mijn hoofd geschapen?

De titel roept meteen de centrale vraag op: waarin zijn nieuwe anders dan oude gelovigen? En waarin geloven zij dan wel? Eerst moeten we, zoals meestal bij Lucebert, eens iets op de tekst ‘kloppen’: het begint met een momentum: wanneer de tijde rijp is. De woordkeus verraadt de nodige bijbelse associaties. De sterren staan goed, er zijn de tekenen aan de hemel. er zijn de stenen die spreken: Lukas. 19:40 ‘Bij Jezus’ intocht in Jeruzalem heffen de leerlingen het ‘Gezegend die daar komt ( uit Psalm 118) aan. De Farizeeën willen dat ze hun mond houden. Dan reageert Jezus: als zij zouden zwijgen, zullen de stenen het wel roepen! Het is een markeringsmoment van de aanvang van het Messiaanse Rijk. In de tweede strofe blijkt iets, wordt iets duidelijk: een herboren aarde, ‘Uw adem vernieuwt de aarde’ zingt psalm 104 op Pinksteren. Die blijkt onze toekomst, ons ‘behouden huis’. Dat doet denken aan de ark, waarin Noach en de zijnen de zondvloed overleefden, behouden werden volgens het oude doopformulier. En zo heette ook het onderkomen op Nova Zembla, waarin Willem Barentz en de zijnen de poolwinter overleefden. Die herboren aarde, die nieuwe lente, is dat het, waarop die nieuwe gelovigen hun hoop vestigen? De heilsstaat? Em hoe komt die dan? U hoort het, een mens leest altijd vanuit zijn eigen referentiekader! Wanneer men mij vraagt over mijn eigen teksten:’ heeft u dat zus en zo bedoeld?’ antwoord ik steevast, als u het zo verstaat, dan heb ik het zo bedoeld, mevrouw. In deze eerste beide delen van het gedicht ontbreekt ieder persoonlijk voornaamwoord. Het lijkt een algemene constatering te zijn. Een soort mededeling. Pas in de laatste strofe zijn wij zelf in het geding: ons oog, en: zal ons leiden… Er wordt dan ook gesproken in de wensvorm, de optativus: ons oog zij ( het is dus nog niet zo). Is het een verlangen, een gebed, en daarom een ‘psalm’? Het levend oog moet om het andere bewogen zijn. De ene mens zal de ander aanzien en zich over hem ontfermen, ben ik dan geneigd te lezen( misschien in domineestaal ) En die beweging brengt ons verder, hoger, ja – klinkt het dan heel klassiek – tot in die hoge veste. En weer denkt de dominee in mij meteen aan het nieuw Jeruzalem, een veste is een stad met muren immers. ( zingen we niet: o stad zo hoog gebouwd!) Dat Jeruzalem, dat immers symbool staat voor die herboren aarde. Maar dat alles is nog een ‘eens’, een ooit’, een straks. Op zijn minst curieus zijn de laatste zinnen: uw dienaar (t’ allerstond ben je meteen geneigd in te vullen.) Zo eindigde je vroeger een brief: uw dienstwillige dienaar…… Maar Dienaar van wie? Van degene aan wie de brief gericht is: Is dat de lezer? Of is dat enigerlei vorm van ‘hogerhand’? Er is van niemand noch sprake geweest. verblijven wij met dank: ook zo’n verplichte frase uit de klassieke brief. Maar hier is het verblijven ook dubbel: het gaat óók om het verblijven in ‘die hoge verste’. Daar verblijven wij ‘met dank’, Klassiek gesproken: Het gebed wordt tot lofzang. En dan de slotregel: uw dienaar dei ten leste/nog parfum peurt uit stank…. Gaat het hier inderdaad om ‘de laatste dingen’? Ten leste? Het ultieme moment, waarin het onmogelijke gebeurt. ( want dat is toch parfum uit stront maken). Lucebert kan nooit de succesroman van Patrick Süsskind ‘Het parfum’ gelezen hebben. Daarin is de hoofdpersoon namelijk
15 de knecht, die dienaar, die de gave blijkt te bezitten uit de meest gore dingen nog betoverende parfums te destilleren. Waar geloven die nieuwe gelovigen nu in? Dubbelzinnigheid schuilt ook die twee middelste regels: geen leven raakt verloren/verdwenen is het kruis Die eerste zin klinkt inderdaad klassiek bekend. Niets en niemand zal meer tevergeefs zijn. Alles en iedereen bereikt zijn bloei en bestemming. Dat is ( ook de horizon) van het Bijbelse denken. Maar dan: Verdwenen is het kruis: Is het kruis hier symbool van alle menselijk lijden, dat zo onlosmakelijk verbonden is met het leven hier en nu. Is dat dan straks voorbij? Of is het kruis hier symbool van een christendom, dat gelooft hoe door het bloed aan het kruis het menselijk elven in ere wordt hersteld. En wordt die gedachte hier vervangen door een meer horizontale: de ene mens ziet de ander aan. Waar wij we elkaar liefhebben, ontvouwt zich de weg naar dat ander, hoger vaderland….. Wie het weet, mag het zeggen…..
Rutger Kopland Een volgend gedicht met een ‘psalmenscheut’ is van Ruther Kopland. Kopland noemt zichzelf ‘streng christelijk opgevoed’. Maar hij heeft dat achter zich gelaten als een ‘kinderlijke illusie’. Het leven heeft geen zin, en geen doel. Er is geen hoop. Toch schemert door vele poëzie iets van een lege plek, waar die bagage-van-huis-uit eenmaal stond. En in zijn poëzie bespeur je het verlangen om die lege plek anders in te vullen.10 Het woord ‘plek’ duikt vaak op in de poëzie van Kopland: het is de benaming van de eigenheid, van het aanwezige. En de lege plek is beeld van het af-wezige, zelfs van de Af-wezige. Dat gaat zelfs zover, dat hij de ‘plek’ identificeert met de dichter zelf: ik zou de open plek willen zijn/ waar jij komt liggen…. Juist de leegte biedt ook weer ruimte voor de ontmoeting. Die is niet al bij voorbaat gevuld. In een interview met de dichter ( Trouw, de Verdieping, 9 november 2007) vertelt Kopland hoe zijn hoogste mystieke ervaring is het staan op een berg, daar waar geen grens meer is tussen jou en de wereld. Er is verder niets meer dan alleen nog de wind. Daar wordt voor hem de plek ‘religieus gevuld’ Bladerend in de poëzie van Kopland11 valt op, hoe vaak daar inderdaad van plek en van wind sprake is. Ze spelen hun rol in het volgende gedicht, met de titel PSALM PSALM Dan zullen deze geluiden wind zijn, als ze opstijgen uit hun plek, dan zullen ze verwaaien, zijn ze wind. We hebben geademd en onze adem was als zuchten van bomen rond een huis, we hebben gepreveld en onze lippen prevelden als een tuin in de regen, we hebben gesproken en onze stemmen dwaalden als vogels boven een dak. Omdat wij onze naam wilden vinden. Maar alleen de wind weet de plek die wij waren, waar en wanneer. 10 11

16 De keuze voor die titel maakt nieuwsgierig: wat is hier dan het ‘psalmige’? Thema is overduidelijk de tijdelijkheid van het menselijk bestaan, onze sterfelijkheid. Je ademt, je prevelt, je zucht, zo is onze natuur, dat hoort bij ons, is onze huis- en tuin-habitat, en in die context zoeken we naar onze naam, naar onze identiteit, onze eigenheid, zoeken we – zouden we vandaag zeggen – naar zin. Ook al is die er niet….. Mijn eerste opgeroepen gedachte - maar daar speelt natuurlijk ook de Schriftgeleerde in mij mij weer parten - is aan Psalm 103: De mens is als gras, als een bloem in het veld. Als de wind daarover gaat, kent zelfs haar plek haar niet meer…. Dat is een constatering, een gedachte die zeer wel aansluit bij Koplands levensvisie. Het is uiteraard wel een omkering van de gedachte uit Psalm 103: het typerende is daar nu net in het volgende ‘maar’ ligt, Maar de goedheid van JHWH is van deze tot de komende eeuw. ondanks onze kortstondigheid. een gedachte, die in het gedicht buiten beschouwing blijft. Er is nog een gedicht van Kopland, dat de titel ‘Een psalm’ draagt. Het geloof heeft voor hem een negatieve connotatie, is verbonden met een strenge opvoeding, die hij achter zich heeft gelaten. Met een strenge seksuele moraal ook, met schuldgevoel en bidden om vergeving. - de bekende goudmijn der litteratoren – Maar de Bijbelse verhalen en de psalmen waren wel dagelijkse kost. En dat alles is dan als volgt verwerkt en verwoord ( ik lees het gedicht alleen; het spreekt verder voor zichzelf): EEN PSALM De grazige weiden de rustige wateren op het behang van mijn kamer ik heb geloofd als een bang kind in behang als mijn moeder voor mij gebeden had en mij weer een dag langer vergeven was bleef ik achter tussen roerloze paarden en koeien te vondeling gelegd in een wereld van gras nu ik opnieuw door gods landerijen moet gaan vind ik geen schrede waarop ik terug kan keren, alleen een kleine hand in de mijne die zich krampt als de geweldige lijven van het vee kreunen en snuiven van vrede
Een volgende ‘psalmdichter’ is

Herman de Coninck (1944-1997) Een jaar na zijn dood verschijnen zijn verzamelde gedichten.12 Ook hij geeft een gedicht de titel ‘psalm’ mee: Een gedicht waarin het seizoen hoorbaar en voelbaar wordt: PSALM Met het eerste koper in de tuin vallen vier okkernoten als houten muzieknoten met droog gedokker op tafel. Domisolsi. In de rododendrons spannen spinnenwebben hun verwachtingspatroon. Zo bijna. Zo nabij. Zoals het nog nazomert diep in oktober. Ik heb. Ik heb zin. Ik heb zin in zinderen, zo lang als een zinkend dak in de zon. Zo nu. Zo wanneer. Ik ben al bezig met herinneren, maar het is nog zo vandaag, zo graag. Hier en daar wordt paars uitgevonden en vazen om het in te doen. Een takje. Enkelvoud. Zo weinig. Zo veel. Zoals de reus die een postzegelgroot fotootje bewaart van zijn reuzin. Zo groot en zo klein is alles. Zo alles. Wat het eerste opvalt is, hoe elke strofe een zintuig raakt: horen, voelen, zien. De okkernoot is Vlaams voor walnoot, maar de letter k ‘tikt’ welluidender, maakt inderdaad muziek. Zo hoor ik zelf juist dezer dagen de walnoten aan de voorkant en de eikels aan de achterkant op de tafels ploffen, met inderdaad zo’n droge tik: het klinkt als het aanslaan van noten! Domisolso is, gezongen, een drieklank! Er is het vasthouden, het bewaren van de hitte, de nazomer in oktober. Maar het wordt tenslotte toch een herinnering. De kleur paars, the color purple, is de kleur van verdriet, rouw, ook van het laatste dat bloeit in de nazomer, de hei. In de structuur van het gedicht klinkt ook, als het tik-tik, de herhaling: zo bijna/nabij, zo nu/wanneer, zo weinig/veel. Ddat is: het is het net nog niet, het raakt er aan, het streeft ernaar. In steeds de twee woorden ( zoals bijna en nabij) staat uitroepteken en vraagteken tegelijk te lezen. Er is het vasthouden, het verwachten ( de spinnenweb) én het herinneren. Naar het bijbels/joodse ( en ook liturgische) adagium: alleen het gedenken doet verwachten! Maar wat precies? De sleutel is m.i. te vinden in de laatste strofe ( ik zou je het liefste in een doosje willen doen en je bewaren, heel goed bewaren – zong Donald Jones in mijn jeugd. De reus in dit gedicht zingt het. Hij is het symbool van het grote, het reus-achtige en koestert iets wat hem lief is, maar toch heel klein is, als in een doosje. Met die sleutel herlees ik de eerste strofen en zie dan hoe steeds in heel kleine dingen ( de vier noten, die ene tak,) het grote wordt gezien en gekoesterd. Waarom heet dit nu psalm? De meest oorspronkelijke betekenis van het woord tehilim, psalmoi, is: lofzang. In die zin is dit gedicht inderdaad een pure lofzang, een lofzang om het leven, waarvan het 12

18 geheim schuilt in kleine dingen. Die herinnering goed bewaren, als kostbaar kleinood, schept nieuwe verwachtingen. Waar is dan het wachten op? Op de grote zomer misschien, zei dominee? Ten besluite:
Sytze de Vries/Willem Barnard In de laatste maanden van zijn leven werd de wereld steeds kleiner voor de inmiddels hoogbejaarde Willem Barnard. Een man aan wie ik – zeker ook als het om de Psalmen gaat - veel te danken heb. Evenals aan Karel Deurloo, met wie ik jarenlang door de ‘Kinderen van Korach’ exerceerde. Ik herlas in die dagen ook het dagboek van Barnard13, en werd getroffen door een regel: ‘ik leef tegen het donker in’. Een regel die meteen een lied opriep. Toen een afgesproken bezoek aan Barnard niet door kon gaan, stuurde ik hem de tekst. Is het een gedicht? Een lied? Het kan gezongen worden. Meerdere componisten hebben inmiddels een melodie gehoord.14 Het is de enige tekst van mijn hand, waar ik het woord Psalm bij schreef. Ik lees het verder zonder commentaar:
PSALM TEGEN DE LEEGTE Ik leef tegen het donker in, tegen de leegte van voor het begin, toen er nog niemand naar mij vroeg, toen nog de nacht mij oversloeg en ik geen naam nog droeg. Ik leef tussen de klippen door. Ik ben een roepende, roep om gehoor. Leegte golft eindeloos op mij aan. Wie ziet of ik niet om zal slaan? Kunt Gij mij soms verstaan? Ik weet van U, verberg U niet, Ik wil geloven dat Gij mij ziet. Breek toch dat hopeloos waarom. Uw Naam luidt: Ik zie naar jou om! Wees wie Gij heet, en kom en wek in mij een nieuw gezang. De doodse stilte maakt mij bang, wanneer ik zwijg in mijn verdriet. Maar hoop vertaalt zich in het lied dat over grenzen ziet.
