Většinou to byli důchodci a ona napočítala čtyři úplně stejné velikánské kostkované nákupní tašky.
Doprovodila by ji obrázkem, zvolila by siluetu sebe a Mickeyho, viděných skrz lupu. A pod tím by stálo: DETEKTIVNÍ KANCELÁŘ SOKOL Hledání stop. Sledování podezřelých. Odhalování zločinů. Navštivte naši kancelář, vybavenou nejnovějším kriminalistickým zařízením. Do sešitku si opsala telefonní číslo z reklamy, že tam zavolá časem, až bude její kancelář plně akceschopná. Konečně autobus dojel ke krajinářsky upraveným trávníkům a zoufale povlávajícím vlajkám v průmyslové zóně, která obklopovala nedávno otevřené Nákupní středisko Zelené doubí.
Patnáct minut nato už Kate procházela klimatizovaným vzduchem tržnice do Zeleného doubí.

Kate honem vyrazila k obchodu Tandy. Dala bych si dětské speciální menu a k tomu banánový nápoj, prosím. A prosím, mohla bych hovězí burger dostat bez salátovky?“ „Není v něm salátovka, ale nakládačka, děvenko.“ Kate si to poznamenala do notesu.
A Opičák Olda, to nebylo ono. Udělala z něj proto Mickeyho. Kate s ním každé ráno probrala denní program a on s ní vždycky jezdil v plátěné brašně z armádních přebytků. Servírka přinesla jídlo. Kate snědla burgra a pročetla si první letošní číslo Beana.
Ani jeden majitel sousedních obchodů nad krámem nebydlel; každý den v šest večer zavřeli a zamířili ke svým půldomkům na předměstí, takže všude kolem Katina pokoje zavládlo ticho a prázdnota. Kate váhala, jestli to nemá něco společného s tím, jak pan Watkins vždycky stojí v krámě a velikým sekáčkem odhání z masa mouchy. Ale možná to byla i nekonečná spirála – čím míň zákazníků pan Watkins měl, tím míň masa nabízel a čím míň masa nabízel, tím míň vypadal jako řezník a tím spíš vypadal jako bláznivý dědula, co sbírá kusy masa a ty pak vystavuje v okně. Když šla kolem něj Kate před týdnem, zjistila, že ve výloze je jeden králík (a Kate věděla najisto, že na celém světě už králičí nejí nikdo, jenom pan Watkins sám), nějaké ledvinky, kuře, vepřový bok a šňůra buřtů. To samo o sobě nebylo u pana Watkinse nic mimořádného.
Celá odpoledne býval zabraný do časopisu New Musical Express nebo si četl knížky o muzikantech.
Jakmile nechal otec Adriana v trafice samotného, jeho syn vypnul v rádiu pořad Jimmyho Younga a zasunul do maličkého kazeťáčku kazetu. Někdy Kate chodila s Adrianem do velkoobchodu a radila mu, jaké cukrovinky by měl nakoupit; to si pak prohlíželi svalnaté skladové dělníky a odhadovali, kdo z nich má hustě popsaný trestní rejstřík.
Kate pak pana Palmera požádala, jestli by jí nemohl napsat nějaký pochvalný komentář k odvedené zakázce, protože si všimla, že podobná osobní doporučení používají k propagaci svých služeb i jiní podnikatelé.
Nacházely se v něm luxusní předměty, třeba mnohobarevná kuličková pera, kovová ořezávátka, celá balení fixů – a kromě toho i seriózní, noblesní předměty, například skládací pořadače a dlouhatánské 21
Jedním uchem poslouchala tlumené brebentění Rádia Zelené doubí a prohlížela si lhostejné tváře lidí, kteří 22
vcházeli do dveří bank a zase z nich vycházeli. Někdy ji to děsilo.
Tam počkala, až prodavači odejdou domů a někdo vypne hudební kulisu.
Myslím Američan, vypadá jako padouši v Columbovi. Podezření: je to najatý zabiják sledující svou oběť. Začínám tušit, že by mohlo jít o tu servírku, co jí hlava roste rovnou z ramenou bez krku. Hodně se po ní kouká. Ještě musím odhalit motiv vraždy, ale zítra s ní zavedu nezávazný hovor a v případě potřeby ji budu varovat. Nejdřív ale potřebuji o panu Opáleném sesbírat víc důkazního materiálu. Na odchodu mu cestou kolem mého stolu upadl zapalovač. Šlo myslím o pokus nahlídnout ke mně do poznámek. Rychle jsem strčila sešit pod jídelníček a on skryl své zklamání.

Upadlo mu něco do odpadkového koše. Pátek 27. dubna Při sledování bank kolem mě prošel samotný muž a vrazil do Barclays.

5 Paní Finneganová zavedla v páté třídě do praxe převratný zasedací pořádek. Ani to nebyl systém „chlapci zvlášť, dívky zvlášť“, jakému dává přednost paní Cressová. A samozřejmě to nebyl ani systém „každý si sedne vedle svého kamaráda“, o jakém sní každé dítě (paní Cressová takový návrh označila za „bizarní“). Šlo o metodu, jejíž pomocí mělo být dosaženo úplné vyváženosti. V každé lavici měl být součet inteligence, zlobivosti, smradlavosti a hlučnosti v rámci možností co nejpodobnější. Hlučného žáka posadí k tichému, zlobivého k žalobníčkovi. Paní Finneganová tím bezpochyby chtěla vytvořit ovzduší nedůvěry: vyrobit třídu z donašečů a vnitřních sporů.
A taky největší špindírové obou pohlaví a nejcáklejší kluk a holka… a ať šlo o jakékoli hodnocení – nejzlobivější, nejhlučnější, největší trapič –, vždycky dokázali kluci postavit toho nejvýraznějšího kandidáta.
Táta si v kuchyni prozpěvoval s ní a chystal jim ke svačině rybí prsty a brambůrky. Už jí to vrtalo hlavou nějakou dobu. S Kate to trochu zacloumalo. „No víš, jako hrát s nima hazard.
Všechny víkendy a prázdniny měli dopředu naplánované.
ši, osudové ženy, stíny a pistole. „Honem, tati. Za chvilku začínají Rockfordovy případy.“ „Honem? Honem? To chceš mít každý rybí prst opečený jinak? Prošvihneš to.“ „Velký umělec musí s podobnou obětí počítat.
Kate to nechápala. Každý pořád máme nějaké příhody. I tatínek jí vyprávěl spoustu příhod, když nemohla usnout. Vdova, jejíž jediná dcera před osmi lety opustila Franka a Kate a našla si nový domov v Austrálii. 35
Ivy se Kate představila a řekla: „Nechci, abys musela do ústavu. Přistěhuju se k tobě, aby se to nestalo. To bych nikomu nepřála. Budu ti vařit a budu tu s tebou bydlet.
všech jejich her ji zaujala jediná.
Do toho horního Kate nakreslila nejrůznější typy vlasů, do druhého obočí, oči a kořeny nosů, do třetího nosy, do toho dolního pak brady a ústa.
Končím.“ Kate div nepadala do mdlob.
Kate to zkusila znovu.
„Nechceme tu 46
žádné agenty s teplou vodou.“ Nakonec si to opsala do sešitu. Někde byly pěkné stolky a naaranžované květiny, někde plno viktoriánských panenek, někde haldy dětských bicyklů a kolečkových bruslí, jinde to zavánělo rajčatovou polívkou.
kaný a popsaný spoustou jmen a slov. Kate to zklamalo. Ráda by bydlela v činžáku s výtahem. Kontrast oproti Trafalgar House bil do očí. Nenápadně zatlačila Mickeyho hlouběji do brašny, mimo dohled.
V prsou ji píchalo a v očích ji pálily slzy. Špatné místo, špatný čas, pomyslela si. Zabořila obličej do Mickeyho měkké hlavičky a zadýchaně mu špitla do oušek: „Změna strategie: všechny zdroje přesunout zpátky do Zeleného doubí.“
Adrian: Přesně to mě napadlo taky. A tak jsem řekl, přirozeně zcela nezávazným tónem: „A co vy, pane Dale, vy za manželkou nepojedete?“ Kate: Dobrá otázka, Adriane. Adrian: Jo, taky jsem si myslel. Kate: No a co odpověděl? Panu Jacksonovi z čísla 42 v Showell Gardens začali říkat „Bezcitný vrahoun“, protože nosil elegantní tříčtvrteční kabát a kožené rukavice.
Musí přece chodit nakupovat do velkoobchodu a vést účetnictví.
„Neposlouchej ji, Kate. Vůbec mě neotravuješ a nejsi divná. Jsi živější než my všichni.
