Sebagai salah satu program studi di lingkungan Fakultas Ilmu Budaya (FIB) Universitas Muhammadiyah Gorontalo, prodi ini berusaha menyediakan Jurnal Ilmiah bagi semua pihak yang dapat dijadikan sebagai sarana untuk mencurahkan ide dan gagasannya sehingga kehadirannya diharapkan dapat menjadi wadah mengembangkan budaya menulis dan meneliti. An Analysis On Teacher‟S Strategies In Teaching Speaking Yulan M. Puluhulawa Sastra Inggris, Fakultas Ilmu Budaya - UMG Abstract This study is aimed at depicting the teacher’s strategies in teaching speaking to students at third semester and recognizing students’ response towards the strategies by involving an English teacher and a class of 16 students. In collecting the data, classroom observation and interview were conducted to identify the strategies of teaching speaking, and questionnaire was administered to the students to gain the data about their response towards the strategies under the umbrella of descriptive research. The result revealed that the strategies used by the teacher were cooperative activities, role-play, creative tasks, and drilling. In the meantime, students’ response towards the strategies resulted in positive attitude as they responded that the strategies helped them to speak, as well as concerned oral production of students whose participation was emphasized. The Students’ Motivation on Learbing English At SMA Muhammadiyah Malang Happy Anastasya Usman, Sastra Inggris, Fakultas Ilmu Budaya - UMG Abstract The study investigated students’ motivation in terms of three motivational constructs: instrumental motivation, integrative motivation and personal motivation based on Gardner’s (1985) and Cooper and Fishman’s (1977) works. Learners’ attitude, on the other hand, regarding 1) the use of English in social context, 2) the use of English in the educational context, 3)the English language and 4) the cultureof the English speaking world were identified. The study sample consist of 30 high school students at SMA Muhammadiyah Malang. A questionnaireand interviewswere used for data collection. For the students’ motivation, the findings showed the subject greater support of instrumental reasons for learning the English language including utilitarian and curriculum reasons. Personal reasons were also regarded as important motives by the students. However, regarding the integrative reasons, the result provided evidence that learning English language motivation. Finally, some pedagogical implications that would help tap the students’ motivation and attitudes were presented. Keywords: motivation, attitudes, English for Specific Purposes

A Study On The Vocational School Students’ Speaking Ability Muhammad Amir, Sastra Inggris, Fakultas Ilmu Budaya - UMG Abstrak Teaching Vocational English builds up high motivation in students for learning English Language. It also presents the connection between the vocation and the foreign language as a finished process and supports the interactivity between the teacher and the students improve both- teacher and students. The Vocational English is a two-way challenge, because (1) it gives the teacher a chance to improve his own teaching abilities, looking for new ways for presenting maximally easy assimilation of Vocational English; (2) it gives the student a chance to improve his personality using immediate transition from vocation to foreign language learning and also to give students an opportunity tointegrate themselves in social life after leaving school. a Study on Students’ Ability in Listening Comprehension Through Film. Indah Wardaty Saud Sastra Inggris, Fakultas Ilmu Budaya - UMG
Abstract This research conducted at the students of the fourth semester English Department in 2006/2007 academic year. This research focused on the students’ ability in listening comprehension through film as media. There were ten items of test used in measuring the students’ ability in listening comprehension. The test comprised of six aspects; context, motivation of speaker, paraphrase meaning, inference meaning, getting ideas and summarize the story. Based on the analyses, I found that that the students’ ability in listening comprehension through film as media classified into excellent. It can be seen on the result of the analyses that the students’ average score in listening comprehension was 84 %. In the first aspect, context, the students’ average score was 92.8 % and it classified into excellent. In motivation of speaker aspect, the students’ average score was 91.2 % and classified into excellent. In paraphrase meaning aspect, the students’ average score was 73.33 % and classified into good enough. In inference meaning aspect, the students’ average score was 73.14 % and classified into good enough. In getting ideas and summarizing the story aspect, the students’ average score were 89 % and 92 % and both the score classified into excellent. Keywords: Listening, Ability, Film, Media

Improving the students’ ability in mastering Vocabulary ability through pictures Basri Usman Amara Sastra Inggris, Fakultas Ilmu Budaya - UMG Abstract The main problem of this research were how to improve vocabulary through pictures and how to motivate the students to apply it in their d English. The research was guided by conceptual frame work leading to the using pictures to improve the students’ motivation to speak English during the process of classroom communication interaction. The research type was an action research. The subject consisted of 20 students of the third special class of SMAN 1 Telaga, Kabupaten Gorontalo in 2010-2011 academic years. The research data were collected using test (test after first treatment and test after the second treatment), observasion for collecting data on the students’ motivation in improving vocabulary ability using series pictures. Data on the students’ ability in masterng vocabulary using pictures were analysed using descriptive and statistical analysis, to know the improvement in mean students after the first cycle and the second cycle. Based on the the first cycle, the students’ average was 67.8, then, on the second treatment, the sytudents’ average increase to be 78.8. it can be conclude that teaching vocabulary throught pictures can improve students’ ability in mastering vocabulary. The Students’ Error Analysis In Using Articles In Writing The Sentences Johansyah Sastra Inggris, Fakultas Ilmu Budaya - UMG Abstract The main purpose of this article is to discuss the importance of error analysis in the teaching of English as a foreign language, although errors are bad things in learning. English as a foreign language, error analysis is advantageous for both learners and teachers. For learners, error analysis is needed to show them in what aspect in grammar which is difficult for them, whereas for teachers, it is required to evaluate them whether they are successful or not in teaching English. In this article, the writer presented some English sentences containing grammatical errors. These grammatical errors were analyzed based on the theories presented by the linguists. This analysis aimed at showing the students the causes and kinds of the grammatical errors. By this way, the students are expected to increase their knowledge on the English grammar. A Descriptive Study On Students Ability In Finding Natural Lexical Equivalent In Translating English Literaty Works Zulkifli Tanipu Sastra Inggris, Fakultas Ilmu Budaya - UMG Abstract Penerjemahan adalah kegiatan menerjemahkan bahasa sumber ke bahasa target yang memiliki padanan kata yang meliputi aspek makna, dan gaya bahasa. (Nida dan Taber, 1969:12). Dalam menerjemahkan sebuah teks, terutama teks sastra, hal terpenting yang harus diperhatikan adalah menemukan padaan kata yang alami dari setiap kata untuk diterjemahkan ke dalam bahasa target. Hal ini sangat penting kaena sebuah hasil terjemahan yang tetap terlihat sebagai sebuah terjemahan yang biasa tetapi terlihat sebagai hasil terjemahan yang baik dan natural. Selain itu, menerjemahkan sebuah teks sastra tidak hanya dengan mengandalkan kamus saja karena makna di dalam kamus hanyalah makna kata secara harfiah. Sehingga banyak hasil terjemahan yang terkesan tidak mencerminkan makna sebenarnya dari bahasa sumber. Keywords : Translation, Narutal Lexical Equivalent, English Literary Works.

Abstract Bahasa Indonesia merupakan media komunikasi yang digunakan oleh rakyat Indonesia dalam berbahasa antar daerah. Bahasa Indonesia juga bisa disebut sebagai jati diri bangsa Indonesia itu sendiri. Bahasa Indonesia sudah dikenal dari anakanak hingga dewasa karena merupakan suatu media yang menasional. Keadaan ini sungguh memprihatinkan. Jika generasi penerus masa depan bangsa Indonesia sudah tidak menggunakan bahasa sendiri dalam berkomunikasi, maka bahasa Indonesia tidak dapat menjalankan fungsinya sebagai bahasa Nasional karena secara formal bahasa Indonesia mempunyai kedudukan sebagai bahasa persatuan, bahasa nasional, bahasa negara, dan bahasa resmi. dan dalam perkembangannya lebih lanjut, bahasa Indonesia berhasil mendudukkan diri sebagai bahasa budaya dan bahasa ilmu. Dalam penelitian ini, penulis memberikan analisis singkat mengenai peran dan fungsi bahasa Inggris didalam komunikasi dalam hal ini siswa sebagai faktor yang mempengaruhi bahasa Indonesia. The Error Analysis Of Translating English To Indonesian: Study Case In Center For Language Development And Overseas Study Salma Rivani Luawo Sastra Inggris, Fakultas Ilmu Budaya - UMG Abstrak Pada era modern seperti sekarang ini, kehadiran seorang penerjemah profesional sangat dibutuhkan oleh masyarakat, khususnya masyarakat yang tidak menguasai bahasa asing dengan baik. Keberadaan penerjemah profesional dapat membantu masyarakat untuk memperoleh informasi yang disampaikan dalam bahasa asing tanpa perlu cemas dengan isi informasi yang disampaikan sebab telah diterjemahkan dengan baik ke dalam bahasa yang dikuasai masyarakat. Melihat penting dan perlunya penerjemahan sebagai sarana pengejaran sain dan teknologi dan sebagai media komunikasi lintas budaya di samping sebagai suatu bidang kajian yang menarik bagi linguistik bandingan, linguistik, semantik dan pragmatic sampai dengan pengajaran bahasa, tulisan ini mencoba memberikan tinjauan teoritis tentang penerjemahan.
