Hulló levélt hányszor feledtet A megváltó, a gyilkos ón!...

Teljes katalógusunk megtekinthető, letölthető a szövetségünk honlapjáról. Könyvtárosunk, Ámossy Györgyi nagy szeretettel várja az Önök jelentkezését, ha szívesen olvasgatnának a meglévő kötetek közül. További információ a kölcsönzés rendjéről: hungarianamerican.org Klubok / Könyvtár
Board’s Column I cannot believe by the time these lines are published, the calendar shows it's November already. We have long since left behind the magical summer days and carefree vacations. September and October brought a lot of changes for all of us: school starting, organization of new tasks, and of course the whirls of the Halloween party are also behind us. Now, while fall’s golden colors are slowly replaced by the murky, rainy weather, many of us spend more time inside our warm and cozy homes. If you have nothing to do, look up the HAAW website! Under Clubs, click on Library. I believe it is absolutely worth it! While organizing the donated books this summer, I had a chance to read through the list of reading materials we currently have in the HAAW library. What can I say? I was flabbergasted when I found that almost all the works of the Hungarian literary and poetic writers are on the libraries shelves. And many more! Did you ever have the chance to glance through the list? Gyorgyi Amossy, our librarian, looks forward to you checking in with her when you want to read from the existing collection. Info: hungarianamerican.org Club/Library.
Ezen kívül még a Magyar Iskola is sok kölcsönözhető könyvvel rendelkezik, ami sok örömet jelenthet a magyar nyelv tanulásában a kicsiknek is. Szánjanak rá néhány pillanatot és keressenek kedvükre való olvasmányt, verset, novellát!
I would also like to mention that the Hungarian school also has a lot of books that even the littlest ones can take home and enjoy. Devote a few moments of your time and find something to your liking whether its poems, short stories or novels.
Kellemes időtöltést, jó olvasást kívánok!
Wishing you many wonderful reads!

Betekintő a mai magyar irodalomba
Írta: Flóra Carlile—Kovács
A mai magyar irodalom alkotásaiból szemezgetünk ebben a rovatban. Kedvcsinálónak szánjuk kortárs íróink, költőink alaposabb megismeréséhez. Lackfi János József Attila díjas író, költő, műfordító, tűzoltó, katona, vadakat terelő juhász. Harminc könyv, tizenhét év tanítás, öt gyerek, egy család, évi száz fellépés, ezer aprócikk szerzője. Gyerekkönyveit ajánljuk a karácsonyfa alá és családi olvasmánynak! Mint mézbe ha pottyan a kósza darázs... ÖRÖK ŐSZ (Petőfi Sándor nyomán) Még nyersen a kertben az őszi valóság, Már hersen a versem az esti szobán. Ám tél jön, iratlan a csend, ez a hósáv, Dér-szegte papír, havazásnyi hiány. Kihűlve ma perzsel a nyár heve: láva! Izzik a mézragacs, vérzik a som, De hűl a papíron aszú mazsolává, Épül a fejben a nyelvi idom.
Mondd, győzhet-e végleg a szó a halálon? Kétlem, Uram, hisz igénk sem örök, De a fátylat, a pókhálót ha lerántom, A könyvben a lét tüze feldübörög: Mint gyíknak a torka, ha lüktet a zöldje, Úgy szűrik a fényt zizegő jegenyék, És izzad aranypikkelyt a szömörce, S a földre leontja a tölgy köpenyét.

Book Review by Dr. Zsuzsa Hantó — HARAMIÁK és EMBEREK This past summer a very valuable new book was published in Budapest, Zsuzsa Hantó's Haramiák és emberek. The book is a collection of the personal experiences of the victims of the post-1945 Communist dictatorship. The victims were the former middle class officially designated as "class aliens," the land-owning farmers and formerly successful business entrepreneurs that were called enemies of the people. The book contains the personal stories of these people who were considered by the Communists as unwanted individuals within society. Some of these people are still living in difficult circumstances, and none of them were ever truly compensated for their lost years, homes and sufferings. In this collection of personal stories you can read about Helen Szablya's and Maria Kramar's recollections of their family histories. The cost of the book is $20 and it can be ordered at

Ismét kellemesen telt a szombati Magyar Iskola, telis-tele izgalmas foglalkozásokkal. A gyerekek gesztenyefigurák készítésével kezdték a délelőttöt. A gesztenyékből fogpiszkálók segítségével készítettek ötletes dolgokat, amelyeket aztán filctollal, színes levelekkel és tollakkal díszítettek. Később a kicsiknek és a nagyoknak vidám foglalkozást tartottak a tanító nénik és bácsik sok énekkel, mondókával és játékkal. Néhány új gyerek is eljött, akiket szeretettel üdvözöltünk. Máris várjuk izgatottan a következő Magyar Iskolát!

Another pleasant Hungarian School day went by this Saturday, full of exciting activities. The children started their morning by creating puppets from horse chestnuts. They used toothpicks to fasten chestnut pieces together to create imaginative figurines, and then proceeded to decorate them with markers, fallen leaves, and colorful feathers. Later, the teachers organized cheerful activities for young and old alike with lots of songs, nursery rhymes and games. We were happy to welcome a few new arrivals as well. The morning snack felt good in the little tummies after all that playing and learning. Last but not least, a puppet theater came to life to tell us the tale of Kippkopp and Tipp Topp. A lot of students took part in the performance while the rest became the cheering audience. We are already looking forward to the next Hungarian School! Until then, we practice the new songs we learned and continue to collect beautiful chestnuts.

We can participate in the Hungarian and EU Parliamentary elections! Well, but how? The full text is posted on HAAW website. Here I will summarize the most important aspects in a nutshell! a) By mail after previous registration. This method should be used by Hungarians living abroad who do not have a permanent Hungarian address. They will vote only for the parties but not for any individual representatives, as they have no district within Hungary. b) In person at the Embassy in Washington DC, as well as at the Consulates General in New York or Los Angeles. This applies to Hungarians who do have a permanent address in Hungary. The next parliamentary elections will take place in the spring of 2014 (presumably during the month of April.) In addition, we can vote at the European Parliamentay elections (the next such election will be in May 2014.) We can also vote on any Hungarian national referendum. Hungarians resident in Hungary are those who own a home in Hungary and are registered there. Their identification card gives this as their home address. Hungarian electors ”living abroad” are the ones who are registered in Hungary as such in the Hungarian address registration. To prove this, after having registered, you will receive an ID that looks like a credit card. Instead of an address, it will state: ”Hungarian citizen living abroad.” This card will also serve as proof of citizenship if your passport has expired. The forms are available from me via e-mail . I will have to notarize the signatures before you can send it on to Los Angeles. As soon as you receive your address registration card, you can ask for being listed among the Hungarian voters. This form can be downloaded from the Internet. Mail takes about 8-10 days to Hungary. The application has to arrive by the 15th day before the elections in order to vote in the 2014 elections. Starting in November this form can also be completed electronically at: www.nvi.hu
Whoever has already received the form ”Névjegyzékbe Vételi Kérelem” (Application to register for the list as a voter) that is proof that they are in the Hungarian registry. But the way you can vote depends on how your address is listed on your Hungarian address registration card. You can still change this status, if you prefer, right now. Those who do not want to change their address will get all of their voting related mail at their Hungarian address. This also means they will have to follow those directions that apply to the voters who have to vote in Washington DC, New York, or Los Angeles. There is no possibility to vote by mail if your address registration has a Hungarian address. The biometric machine was in Seattle on October 19th for an entire day. During this time we worked non-stop from 9AM to 10PM. On Sunday morning we conducted a naturalization ceremony, two Transylvanian families taking the oath for Hungarian citizenship. The Bede Family (2) and the Bogya Family (4) drove from Oregon. It was a true marathonachievement. This was the longest remote consular day made out of Los Angeles. We hope they will come more often from now on. Dr. Miklós Paczuk gave a great talk; we sang the Hungarian and Transylvanian anthems. It was a beautiful ceremony. My trip to Hungary was fantastic. Besides the Fifth World Conference of Honorary Consuls, I had three very successful book presentations of My Only Choice, 1942-1956 Hungary, two together with Maria Kramár and Dr. Zsuzsa Hantó (Haramiák és Emberek). In this book, edited by Dr. Zsuzsa Hanto both Maria’s and my stories are featured (see review in HIREK). Dr. Hantó Zsuzsa organized all three. I also had three radio interviews, one joint with Mária, one with the Toronto Hungarian TV and two school presentations of my book The Fall of the Red Star, which grade 6 was just reading at the American International School. Happy Thanksgiving to all our wonderful Readers!
If you have an apartment, a house, or land in Hungary but live abroad that is not an obstacle to voting. However, if you are registered as living in Hungary, and you want to vote by mail, you have to change your address to ”Hungarian living abroad.”

A próbák első felét magyarul tartom. Próbáinkat szombat délelőttönként tartjuk 10-12 óráig a Phinney Neighborhood Centerben. Minden érdeklődőt szeretettel várunk! Bővebb info:

Kisbetyárok Children’s Group
What a great feeling it was when I discovered the Seattle Hungarian dance group on the internet as my husband and I researched our transition from Budakeszi to Seattle two years ago. Ever since I was young, Hungarian dance has played a huge role in my life, and the difficulty of moving was made easier by the knowledge that I would find people with similar interests in our new city. Hungarian dance is not simply a single type of dance among many, it’s a cultural force which creates community, an almost indescribably complex and richly-layered tradition, nourishment for the spirit and soul. It was no accident that we arrived when we did, the dance group was looking for people to help out. Last year I started teaching new Hungarian folk games to the kids, and this year a new schedule has begun: during the warm-up we use rhythm exercises and and basic dance steps, then practice Felcsíki and Moldavian dances. And we never leave out the singing, the traditional rhymes, and the games! This first half of the practice is taught in Hungarian. Then after a short break the Isely family works with the children during the second half. Tallózó Folklór Kitörő sikerrel turnézik Amerikában a Magyar Állami Népi Együttes. Érzik benne a hazait… Vallás A budapesti Szent István-bazilika előtti téren szentmise keretében avatták boldoggá Sándor István szalézi szerzetest, aki száznyolcvannégy óra vallatás után is hűséges maradt hivatásához. Világörökség A Magyar Nemzeti Vagyonkezelő Zrt. használatába kerül a Citadella, miután lezárult a világörökségi törvény alapján folytatott közigazgatási eljárás a nemzeti vagyon részét képező Citadella használatával, hasznosításával kapcsolatban. A határozat kimondja, hogy a Citadella eddigi használata, hasznosítása nem felel meg a világörökségi törvényben foglalt követelményeknek, ezért a Citadellát használó, hasznosító személyek, társaságok és cégek kötelesek az általuk birtokolt területeket 30 napon belül az állam tulajdonosi jogait gyakorló szerv birtokába adni. Népművészet Ismét tanítják a népi mesterségeket, a hímzést, a szövést a Sárközben, amelynek népművészete 2012-ben került fel a magyar szellemi kulturális örökség jegyzékére. A kulturális örökség nemzeti bizottsága öt sárközi település - Decs, Őcsény, Alsónyék, Sárpilis és Báta - jelölése nyomán tette az örökség részévé a sárközi szövést, hímzést, gyöngyfűzést és népviseletet, amelyek a nyelvjárással és a helyi népdalokkal, táncokkal együtt jellemzik a tájegység kultúráját. Miután országos népművészeti bolthálózat nincs, a tervek szerint a szőtteseket szociális szövetkezeten keresztül, tájházi boltokban, helyitermék-üzletekben értékesítik majd.

Összeállította: Ferenczy Péter Adótörvények Az Országgyűlés most benyújtott adótörvény tervezete szerint a kiskeresetű családok adócsökkentésének éve lesz 2014, a jövő évi adótörvények jelentősen mérsékelik a kiskeresetű családok adóterheit. A törvényjavaslat egyik legfontosabb eleme a gyermekvállalást támogató családi járulékkedvezmény bevezetése. A jövő évtől a legalacsonyabb jövedelmű családok az egészségügyi- és nyugdíjbiztosítási járulékok után is igénybe vehetik a családi adókedvezményt, ezzel a legalacsonyabb keresetűek köréből 260 ezer család jut többletjövedelemhez, az idei évhez képest 53 milliárd forinttal több maradhat náluk. Zene A világ több mint száz országában mutatja be egyszerre a C Music Television nevű zenecsatorna Havasi Balázs legújabb zenei videóját. A települést a Kr. e. 2.

Folklore The Hungarian National Folk Ensemble is in the middle of a highly successful tour in the US. The American public in Fairfax, Virginia received their performance with acclaim. According to band leader and violin player István Pál “Szalonna”, the warm reception at this 17th presentation of the Hungarian Rhapsody tour is no exception: “The success of our performance is not tied to the number of Hungarians living in that area. Americans, Mexicans, Chinese, Russians come up to us with warm praising words after the concerts. They are touched by the elemental energy and power that we put in. They feel it. The fifteen dancing pairs, six musicians and one solo singer will perform at 74 locations, from San Jose, to Toronto, to Florida. The Hungarian Rhapsody is inspired by Hungarian folklore and by the music of classic composer Franz Liszt. It consists of two 50-minute presentation segments. Religion István Sándor was canonized during a holy mass held in front of the Saint Stephen Basilica in Budapest. Sándor stayed true to his faith even after one hundred and eightyfour hours of torture. He was condemned to death and was executed by hanging at the age of thirty-nine. Pope Francis was represented by Cardinal Angelo Amato, the Prefect of Congregation for the Causes of Saints. He announced the beatification of Sándor, stating that “if religious persecution causes a rift in humanity, martyrs fill up this rift through their forgiveness and sacrifice.” World heritage The proceedings regarding the use of the Citadella have concluded by passing management of the Citadella into the hands of the Hungarian National Treasure Handling Company. The Citadella is part of World Heritage and as such falls under international law governing world heritage. The decision explains that the past use of the Citadella was not in compliance with the regulations, and because of this, the persons, groups or businesses currently using the Citadella need to pass the property to the group representing the rights of the Hungarian State within 30 days. Folk art The folk art of the Sárköz area was placed on the registry of Hungarian Spiritual and Cultural Heritage in 2012, and folk crafts such as embroidery and weaving are taught again. The Council of National Heritage designated five villages, Decs, Őcsény, Alsónyék, Sárpilis and Báta to represent the culture typical of the area through embroidery, weaving, beading, folk costumes, folk songs and dances. Since currently there is no national chain of folk art shops, the handmade folk art products will be sold in local establishments.

Translated by Zsóka Jakab Tax law According to a law proposal recently submitted to the Parliament, taxes for families with moderate to small incomes will significantly decrease in 2014. The most important part of the proposal is the introduction of family support for those who have children. Starting next year, low income families will be able to claim tax deduction even for income from health and social security. With this change, 260 thousand low income families will have more left in their pockets, sharing 53 billion forints. Music The C Music Television channel will simultaneously broadcast Balázs Havasi’s latest music video in more than one hundred countries. The interest of this channel broadcasting exclusively classical and film music was captured by the video clip entitled “Spring Breeze – Bridge of Cultures,” in which Havasi, a pianist and composer, reworked a Hungarian folk song, providing it with international flair. This video that offers unique visual interest has become the most viewed YouTube clip in Hungary during the past two weeks. Outside the borders According to news from the “Vajdaság Today” news site, unknown perpetrators stole the statue called Struggling Bird and damaged its pedestal in the cemetery in Szabadka. The statue was originally raised to commemorate a 19441945 blood bath. It is not yet known whether this is a simple theft or has some political motivation. There is a yearly commemoration of the blood baths at the statue located in the cemetery on the Zentai Road. 852 people, aged between 12 and 80 years, were murdered on parcel number 44 of the cemetery. The commemorative statue featuring a turul bird and weighing between 350 and 400 kilograms is the work of sculptor Ferenc Kalmár. Archeology Experts of the Archeological Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences unearthed a dirt fortress dating back to the Bronze Age in the Dabas-Kakucs area. The residents of the four thousand-year-old development used to farm and raise animals and were familiar with metal working and pottery. Approximately 150 to 200 members of the Vatya Culture that farmed and herded along the Danube lived at this location. The archeologists unearthed pottery, blade shards, smaller rock tools, bronze objects and a gold hair ornament.
