Duri ng July 2006, abov e normal rai nfall i s expected across mos t of the regi on i n Indonesi a, parti cularly i n Central Sumatra, West, Central and South Kali mantan, Sulaw esi , Maluku and Papua. People li vi ng i n areas know n as prone to landsli de and flood i n those regi ons need to be w arned . NTT regi on i s conti nui ng to recei ve defi ci t rai nfall. Food i nsecuri ty concerns i s raised, parti cularly i n di stri cts of Flores Island due to crop fai lure. Mt. Merapi is sti ll under the hi ghes t level of aler tness (“Bew are” status). Possi ble i mpacts of Merapi’ s erupti on peri od si nce Apri l 2006 to w ater, crops and li vestock need to be assessed. In for thcomi ng months food s ecuri ty of people li vi ng i n hazar dous zones may di srupt due to crop fai lure, reduced li vestock producti on, and w ater contami nati on as a result of volcani c acti vi ty.

These obs ervati ons w ere confi rmed by data obtai ned fr om fi eld rai nfall s tati ons. Cli mate Predi cti on Center of NOAA recorded, as of 26 June 2006, above normal averages at rai nfall stati ons i n Padang of West Sumatra, Banjarmasin of South Kalimantan, and Menado of North Sulawesi (source: cpc.noaa.gov).
Regi ons, w hi ch i ndi cated hi gh rai nfall i ntensi ty parti cularly i n areas know n as prone to flood and landsli de* and hi gh defores tati on should be closely moni tored.

Curah Hujan di Bawah Normal
Below Normal Rainfall
Accor di ng to the rai nfall predi cti on of July 2006 produced by LAPAN, NTT area wi ll li kely conti nue to experi ence below normal rai nfall i n July 2006.
The rai nfall moni tori ng confi rmed the predi cti on as show n i n Fi gure 3. Rai nfall accumulati on as of June 2006 w as below i ts normal average. Prolonged rai nfall defi ci ts i n Nusatenggara Ti mur regi ons could res ult i nto the ex tensi on of crop fai lure, as recently occurred i n Si kka di stri ct and other areas. 35,559 househol ds repor ted faci ng food shor tage i n Si kka.
Si stem pertani an di NTT umumnya adalah monokul tur, yang di sebabkan oleh kondi si keri ng yang berkepanjangan dan keterbatasan kesesuai an lahan untuk tanaman pangan.
Typi cal monoculture farmi ng system i s adopted i n most of NTT regi ons, mai nly due to extr eme dry w eather condi ti on and limi ted land sui tabi li ty to food crops.

Status akti fi tas Gunung M erapi masi h tetap pada level tertinggi (Status “ Aw as”), khususnya di seki tar Sungai Gendol.
The alertness status of Mt. Merapi remains under the highest level (“Bew are” status), parti cularly for surroundi ng Gendol River area.
BPPTK recommends to clear the ar ea alongsi de Krasak/Bebeng Ri ver, Bedog Ri ver, Boyong Ri ver, Gendol Ri ver wi thi n radi us of 8 km fr om the Merapi’ s crater, as w ell as 300 m from the ri ver cli ff.
